adjusting valves
I'm not sure if it is my valves that need adjusted. but when my engine is cold, i start it up and it begins to knock. When it begins to warm up the knocking sound goes away....... I'm hoping it is just my valves needing adjusted........ any info will be greatly app.......... thanks, Dustin

Re: adjusting valves (V-8 who)
Perhaps. Your valves shouldn't really 'knock'. Tap, yes, but knock, no. Easy way to find out, adjust your valves. Potentially you have a rod, or wrist pin bearing going. Hopefully just a valve adjustment and that's all. If you haven't done one, it's fairly easy. Just check the FAQ's. Good luck.

yeah it wont hurt to do a valve lash adjustment, do u have a b or d series engine.if u have a b series. u will need a special valve lash adjustment tools or u can diy make one. use a deep 10mm socket and hammer it into a 5/8 box wrench..i have posted some pics of how to diy in this forum. run a search by my id and u will find it
it is easy to do.but time consuming and also there is a chance u might need to replace valve cover gasket.

i did the valve adjustment today and none of the valves seemed to be out of adjustment but i did it anyway. When you got each cylinder at top dead center should the rocker arms still move up and down a little bit? Like when i have cyl. #1 at tdc. cyl #4 rocker arms won't move. Is this normal?

thats normal, because now they are pushing on the valves, the vlave lash is only there when the rockers aren't supposed to be pushing, this makes sure that once the engine is warmed up and everything has expanded that the valves aren't slightly open all the time..

Re: (garyc17)
mine always does it in the winter. I had it up the dealer one day fixing cel under warranty and asked them about the noise and they told me it was piston slap because of the way the pistons and the block change do to the cold and heat so when it warms up it stops. I thought it was the valves too because I never had them adjusted.
piston slap sounds just like a knock but it goes away when the engine is warm, dealer also told me honda's have been doing this for yrs so it's nothing new.

The strange thing is that after it goes away when warmed up, it comes back when you travel on the freeway for sometime. I believe it is not piston slap because of this. The temperature drop on the freeway should not bring the temperature so low as to cause the slapping to reoccur?
