99 ex cluster or vss
I have a 99ex that has a jumping tach, where one min it will work and the next it wont work. So I am wondering if that is my cluster or could it be my speed sensor?

Re: 99 ex cluster or vss (BlueIntegraBoy)
mybad guys i posted before i went to work.
yea i meant my speedo.
Ive tried changing out clusters, but problem still there. Its off most of the time, but every once and awhile it will kick back on. So you guys suggested i replace my dizzy and cap, or should i replace my speed sensor?

low voltage output by the alternator can cause this too. get your alternator tested. change dizzy as well if you can.

If the problem is with the speedo, and you swapped clusters and it's still there, then it's the VSS or as posted a possible voltage issue, but my $$ is on VSS.

Speedo problems like you are describing are going to be either: cluster (which you have already swapped), VSS (which you have already swapped, and should throw a CEL), or the wiring that connects it all. The cap and rotor would affect the tach signal, I don't think that's the right direction to go for this.

I had the same problem w/ my civic and it turned out to be the pins on the vss side of the wiring harness were burnt/eroded away along with the pins on the vss itsself. I would check that if i were you.
