99 Civic EX trouble shooting... Tranny?
Hey all,
New member, long time lurker. I have a bone stock 1999 Civic EX 5speed with a D16y8, No aftermarket exhaust or intake on it. Love the car. Gets me from point A to point B with with little gas. Anyway, for the past two years i have had a noise coming from what seems like the transmission. At first i thought it was the throwout bearing. The noise started out as a little hum while driving and got progressively worse. So i went and replaced it with a Exedy Clutch Kit. (Needed a new one anyway). Some of the noise went down however the bulk of it was still there. After doing more research it seemed to be the ISB. Went and bought a used tranny that seemed to have a good ISB, No free play in the shaft, and would spin freely. Had the mechanic swap them out, and the old tranny definitely had a bad ISB (lots of free play) However it is still making the same damn noise! Either i got a bad tranny or its something else. Here's a link to video i took of driving my car. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

it's a common problem with a d series transmission. why didn't you just have the bearing replaced? It's just a roll of the dice with getting used parts.

The original transmission would also grind pretty good when changing gears, and I had a difficult time putting it into first, and reverse. It was a lot cheaper to buy a used tranny, than to fully rebuild the original one. The owner of the used tranny wrecked his car (still drivable) . Said he experienced no such noise, when i told him of the problems after having the tranny installed, and actually gave us our money back, saying he's not out to rip anybody off.
