Default 99 civic ex auto trans problem, code: p0730

Vehicle has 160k miles and is all stock.

Gets stuck in at third and won't shift into fourth. It did stall once and wouldn't run for the short period. Seems to be able drive when it is cold.

CEL with codes: p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304 and p0730.

I noticed the fluid was dark so I changed the transmission fluid 155k miles before this happened. Prior to that, I think it was changed 120k and probably never replaced before that.

I have read that it is not recommended to replace auto trans fluid if it had never been replaced before, not sure why.

Mechanic says transmission needs to be replaced. Is there anything else I can do before replacing? Solenoid testing?

Not to familiar with auto trans, all of my vehicles have been manuals.

It looks like you have multiple misfires (P0300) and individual cylinder misfires (P0301-4) and a faulty shift control system (P0730) which could be an internal issue in the transmission not allowing it to shift to 4th. Most times when these transmissions start acting up there isn't much you can do, but you could try some transmission treatment and then try to flush the trans. There is no way to service them as you would other transmissions as they have no removable pan.

This may sound weird, but many times if the transmission wasn't properly serviced throughout its life, flushing it may actually make it worse. I haven't ever had good luck flushing any auto transmissions in my life. You should take a look at the the distributor for your misfire issue as a multiple misfire can sometimes be traced back to a bad distributor. Good luck!

From personal experience I've drain and filled Honda/Acura automatics 3 times each and had no ill effects. My sisters integra is still running and I'm sure she's hit the 200k mark. My civic just made the 200k mark but I already have plans of rebuilding it.

Draining and filling is a bit different than actually "flushing" a transmission, but you are right that draining/refilling will usually not produce any ill effects. As long as you do it at scheduled intervals it's proper maintenance and obviously it is a good idea. It's the transmissions that have never been flushed that are usually too far gone before the owner decides to flush the transmission because its started doing strange things.

Thats why alot of people don't recommend flushing any systems regardless of intervals or not. I had a tacoma almost would not move from a stop after having it service within intervals. I constantly kept driving it and it went away.
