Icon2 99 Auto Transmission Problem

I was given a 1999 civic 4 door (I think lx) non vtec tonight with an auto. The guy said the transmission was out of it and was drivable just not in 4th gear. upon driving it home i noticed when it would shift in to 4th it would pull just fine and shift fine up to 4th but when letting the car coast there was a loud whining noise. Its hard to explain. my dad described it like a hydrolic pump running but loader. Ill try to get a video of it tomorrow. as soon as you start to apply the throttle again it would quite down. Only does it in 4th though and under coast. I was planing on putting a used transmission in it but im not sure if it might be something that will be easier to fix than that. the car has 176xxx on it. im hoping this will make me a nice first car.

I'd start by doing three drain and refill cycles with fresh Honda ATF.

Any CEL or D4 codes? Click the Codes link in my signature.

No lights, every thing seemed normal other than the sound. and the was a red break light that would come on and off (im thinking its low on break fluid) the lights on the gear selector were normal and no CEL.

Listen to Ron, go buy 6-7 quarts of genuine Honda ATF and drain the trans, refill drive for around 15 minutes, then repeat 2 more times.

My 1999 Civic Lx has 265,xxx miles all original and have never had a problem with the auto trans, but Honda auto trans are picky and really only like genuine fluid.

Aperrently the trans dipstick isnt the right one and is to short. the car has been wrecked and some how or another that got relaced and im thinking with the wrong one. the car wasnt hit that hard so i dont know how it happened but you never know. Im going to replace all the fluids in the car soon but i might take a 1/2 quart out of the trans and see what happens. I looked online but couldnt find the the trans dipstick, im going to call around in the morning

http://www.hondapartscheap.com/parts...eedometer-gear
Item number 5

It's the same P/N for all 92-00 Civic's with AT, except for models with the CVT trans, it has a different dipstick
