Default 98 EX(d16y8) rough idle then stall

please please read all of it

d16y8 with a cone filter on the stock rubber intake.170k miles.

some background info: bought the car at 142k miles. since then, I have done meticulous maintenance (full tuneup + PVC valve, cleaned iacv, ask me things I could've missed but I've done many) I've been meaning to replace the dizzy o-ring because its been leaking verrrry slllooowwwllyyy since I bought it.

the problem that has become more common recently is that il be driving normally but when I come to a stop and put the car from whatever gear I'm in into neutral, the idle dips down to around 200 ( the line above the 0 rpm line) 90% of the time. occasionally, it'll just stall out. it starts up after, and doesn't usually stall out again. only when the engine is warm.

I've read this could be a vacuum leak and I wouldn't doubt it is since I doubt any of these 170k mile old hoses have been replaced. but the fact this happens only occasionally makes me wonder it could be something else. also, when the engine is cold, it usually takes another second or 2 to start up and sometimes, VERY RARELY, dips down about to stall before shooting up to a normal rpm.

could it be the fuel pump? that hasn't been changed ever. or maybe I need new plugs? or maybe it's the dizzy o-ring? Any help is appreciated plz!

Is this an auto and manual tranny? Could be muffler bearings... hahaha, j/k... seriously, auto or manual? If you leave it in gear does it do the same thing?

Assuming manual since he puts it from gear to neutral at stop lights.

^^^Never know... Anyways, I assume this only happens when you apply the brakes? No other time, even while sitting idle?

it does happen after the brakes are applied. now that I think of it, only after. never happens if I were to just let it warm up to idle. hmmmmmm

well somewhat of an update. I did some research and I found out that putting a vacuum cap over the valve cover breather isn't smart. it's been like that since about late September when I removed my cold air intake (which had a hose from the breather to the piping). not sure if that's to do with anything, but I did put a little cone filter on it instead.

Uncap and properly hook up the breather hose. You will reduce the idle speed if air cannot circulate from the intake/breather hose through the crankcase and PCV valve/hose to the intake manifold.

If the breather/PCV system is properly installed, then adjust the idle speed. See the FAQs sticky for a diagram.
