i just got my self a point a to point b driver witha blown motor help me out.

Can i just drop a regular non vtec engine and still pass IM?
do i need a diffrent wireharness/ECU?
car is an AT.

Try finding the same y8 motor. They're pretty cheap and everyone has one for sale. I belive you can put a non vtec motor with some wiring modification and a different ecu. Correct me if im wrong.

get yourself any OBD2 96-98 d series motor - vtec or not and throw that in.

Pre 96 motors ar OBDI and lack the knock sensor, so if you use one it will throw a code for that, plus some other things are different like the ECU and the distributor wiring, and the alternator wiring. May or may not give you troubles. I get the feeling you don't want to mess with figuring out this extra stuff, so a 96-98 OBD2 might be the way to go.

Or, get any old D series block and put all your old stuff on it, including the oil pump which has the knock sensor on it, and then put that in.

Or screw the knock sensor and just drive it with the cel on.

If your vtec head is still ok, throw it on the non vtec engine and your all good.

I don't know anything about whatever inspections you may need to pass in your state to be legal though

96-98 is obd2a 99-00 is obd2b they are different and youd need a conversion harness for the ecu if you get the obd2b ecu. not sure about emissions for you either but some states require you to get the engine that matches or is newer than the car. also non vtec and vtec have o2 sensors in different locations so i dont know if that will cause problems. as for availability non vtecs are a dime a dozen but the y8 is getting a little harder to find and its more expensive. y8 head on y7 block is a mini me, im not a fan of it because its not much more power for more work.

Maybe its called the "f'n sensor that bolts to the oil pump on an obd2 motor" idk - I don't have the maual here at my computer

crankshaft position sensor, not KNOCK sensor.

if i called your car a jetta would you not correct me???
