Default replacing motor on a 98 civic dx

Hello guys, my sister has a 98 civic dx auto. It's acting up and has over 200k on it.. she would like to get a replacement motor. Would any D-series motor bolt in just fine? If she put in an EX motor, would she have use an EX ecu? Also would the wiring just plug in? Sorry for the stupid questions, just need to know. Thanks guys

stick with a 96-00 engine that way you don't have any OBD problems.

if she put in a ex, vtec, motor yes she would have to use the ecu. you would have to run a couple wires for the vtec, if you got the ex engine.

i believe you need to stick with a 96-98 civic motor because those are OBD2a and the 99-00 civs are OBD2b. i'm not to sure what would have to be changed though

You can use whichever motor, 96-00, so long as you have a 96-98 ECU and harness, or a 99-00 ECU and harness. It is possible the 99-00 stuff might look for a fuel tank pressure sensor that is not there and throw a code, however.

Just as long as it's an obd2 (96-00) motor, yes. If you feel like doing the electrical for the OBD swap, then the sky is the limit.
