Airbag deployment, when going from an SRS-equipped wheel to non-SRS, is typically a non-issue. I have detached live air bags and not had any explosion.
The thing to keep in mind is that you are -removing- it from its power source altogether, rather than brushing it against it. The SRS computer doesn't care if it's being detached, and does not even see it.
However, you are about to get 5 replies that say detach your airbag for 15-30 minutes before doing it. I'd definitely pull the battery negative terminal, as when doing any electrical work, but overall you'll be relatively safe pulling an SRS airbag off. I have yet to see the aftermath of one 'randomly' exploding.
Just worry about it not-exploding when/if there is a wreck, but to each their own. :-)

Well what you'll see when you take off your steering wheel is a yellow SRS unit which is what you'll run into after you've taken off the airbag AND the actual wheel. The SRS is held on by a few screws and is attached to a plug under the dash. IF you can unplug it, do it. However, if you can't, do not cut the harness. If you do your entire SRS system is messed and you'll have a SRS light and your passenger airbag will be disabled.
What I did was, I couldn't unplug the SRS because the space is too tight under the dash. So all I did was I took the SRS unit and just stuck it under and behind the dash and held it on with double sided tape. This is just incase in the future I want to put the steering wheel back on for whatever reason. But yes, I've had no problem with doing it this way and no SRS light.
