98 Civic HX - running rough and TDC code :(
I've got a 98 Civic HX, completely stock. Just got the car a couple months ago. It has 245,000 miles on it and the car ran fine when I test drove it so I bought it and it drove fine for about a week. Then the check engine came on and it acted as if it wanted to die, cutting in and out, while I was accelerating. I ran the codes and it was throwing a TDC sensor, so I replaced the dizzy and the problem wasn't fixed. It's now at a shop. I was going to have them do a y8 swap, but they wanted a lot and I don't have that kind of money. So I asked if they could fix what was wrong with that motor, told them the symptoms, and they told me they'd get back with me. After about a week I called them back and they said it was throwing a misfire code, (which they apparently fixed with new plug wires) along with some others, basically telling me my manifold was garbage. I know a replacement for an HX is really pricey so I just asked if they'd be able to put a used y8 one on for me and call it a day, and they are currently checking pricing and availability. I'm not sure what to do from here but I am considering picking the car up tomorrow and doing things myself. Any advice or what you guys think could be wrong?

Re: 98 Civic HX problems :(
It's still running like crap, cutting out and what not. The manifold is cracked. I was going to have them y8 swap it, but it was 2,400 bucks because apparently they're so different and changes to all the wiring and stuff. They want $700 for a new manifold, so I asked if they could put a used y8 one on there and put a cat on the actual exhaust, and the shop made excuses of why they couldn't do that. How similar are the D16Y8 and the D16Y5? And would I be able to put a y8 mani/header on my y5?

Re: 98 Civic HX problems :(
You brought the car in with a TDC code. Is that fixed?
If you have tools and are willing and able to learn, get you car out of the shop and fix it yourself with our help. I see no reason at this point to be talking about engine swaps. The great gas mileage of the HX can return your investment.

Re: 98 Civic HX problems :(
As of right now, that's the plan. I'm picking the car up early tomorrow and going to start digging into it myself. And the TDC code was fixed, but the check engine came back on 2 days after I replaced the distributer and it threw that code again. I guess I just got a bad distributer. Then the shop said it was throwing a random misfire code (the plug wires fixed) and then an EGR code. They said nothing about the TDC

Re: 98 Civic HX problems :(
The TDC code obviously was not fixed. A bad TDC sensor in the distributor is only one possible cause for the code.
When you get the car home, pull the codes. Then reset the ECU and see which codes repeat after running the engine. Post codes that repeat.
