Default 98 Civic EX Oil Still dirty after oilchange

OK, well i bought the EX from a guy at a decent price. I did an oil change and the oil was still dirty. I thought well this guy did say he didnt really change the oil since he had the car and he let it sit for 6 months. I said ok maybe the second oil change would change it around a little. I just did another oil change now and the motor is still showing a dirty oil on the dipstick. ALSO, i forgot to mention i dont drive the car i just let it run when i took the oil out from the oil from a week ago it was black mostly. WHat is going on? Couple more oil changes fix the probleM????

sounds like you havnt changed the oil filter at the same time as the oil, it CAN hold a good litre of oil in there (pending brand of oil filter) if the oil is still dirty after the oil change, its because its mixing with the oil in the oil filter.

Pull the valve cover off and post a picture of what you see.

Not necessarily. You would probably just need to wipe off the oil and seal the rounded parts of the valve cover gasket with some red silicone RTV sealant, which you would do even for a new gasket. You need to figure out whether you are dealing with a heavily "sludged" engine.

Problaly easier to take the valve cover off, just remember to mark your plug wires when you pull them out because some are different lengths ( if not OEM, i assume they are) then post pictures.
estimated time to complete task : 5 minutes of drinking beer, 5 minuites to remove, 5 minutes to take picture and post
get to it.

I had good luck with Auto-RX. It cleaned up the engine and now the oil stays clean till the next change. It takes many miles of driving but it does work, and cuts down oil burning from sticky rings too.

My '97 HX came with dirty oil. I drive about 300-400 miles/week so oil changes happen every couple months or so. After the first few oil changes it got dirty quickly , maybe a couple hundred miles after the change. Also it was burning oil badly, about 4-5 oz per hundred miles. That's about 1.5 qt per 1000 miles which is pretty bad.

After a few changes I started using Auto-RX. Comes in a 12-oz bottle, you add 8-12 oz with your oil change. Drive 2500 miles, that's the cleaning cycle. Now change the oil and filter, and DON'T add A-RX this time; this is the rinse cycle. Drive 2500 mi. in the rinse cycle.

During the 1st RINSE cycle the oil stayed cleaner longer. Stayed pretty clean for about 1000 miles. I completed the first rinse cycle, 2500 miles. I then gave it another A-RX treatment, and drove the 2500 miles cleaning cycle. During the 2nd rinse cycle the oil truly stayed clean through the whole 2500 miles.

I'm now on the third A-RX cycle. The oil is staying clean but since it's still burning about 2 oz per 100 miles I want to see if I can clean it up better. Each cycle is 5000 miles (2500 each for clean and rinse) so it's not fast. But I don't know another way to clean up sticky piston rings outside of an engine overhaul.
