97 ek hatch b16 block/gsr head no vtec
i picked up a 97 ek hatch today with a b16 block with gsr head and the vtec doesnt work. im getting 4 codes 21,23,36,41. I can fix three of the codes but not code 36 because thats the cel code found on jdm ecus for traction control or some sort. I have a p30 jdm ecu with a OBD1 jumper harness. When i drive the car it barely revs up and is slow!!! when i floor it the car goes no where. So could it be the codes that im getting? Also would i just wire the vtec normally or would i have to do something different because of the b16 block/gsr setup.

Re: pick up 97 ek hatch today...headache
getting a new ecu won't help all of your problems. i dont know, but i found myself getting more and more confused as i read your question. it sounds to me like you have all kinds of problems needed to be worked out. is the block/head jdm or usdm? u picked up a car that doesn't even run right? are you a mechanic or did you just buy it?
i dont think that the traction control cel would effect your motor all that much. i know that code 21 will keep you from engaging vtec, knock sensor-23 will cause your motor to run like absolute sh*t ( a.k.a. "safe mode". basically, your ecu causes your rev limiter to fall and all kinds of fuel to be dumped into it at all rpm's). the o2 sensor code on top of all that and you are looking at a motor that you might as well not even start, let alone push to the limits. fix the codes/sensors and if you want your motor to last, don't start it until those codes are taken care of.

Re: 97 ek hatch b16 block/gsr head no vtec
well the block is a b16a and the head is a gsr. i bought the ek pretty much for the shell and that was the motor that was in there. i have a built ls vtec that im going to put in there but i wanna get the motor thats in the car now running right. since its a gsr head am i going to need to run extra wires for vtec? i dont think the previous owner ran the vtec wires right. since im getting 21 and 23 i have a feeling wires werent done right. i hope this clears it up a bit. im not worry about code 36 just 21 and 23. im going to put the O2 sensor in tomorrow to see if that code will go away

i know that the knock sensor has a huge role in how the motor runs. i dont think there is much of a difference in a b16 head and a gsr head as far as sensors go. the only thing from my knowledge is that the jdm heads dont have the extra vtec sensor, so the jdm ecu shouldn't be looking for it. now as far as the jdm vs. jdm knock sensors go, it all depends on what the ecu is looking for. im assuming that the jdm b16 block that you have has a knock sensor and since the ecu that you have is looking for a knock sensor, there is something in the wiring. make sure you check all of the different colored wires in the ecu are running to the correct sensors. it should tell you in a wiring diagram. other than that, theres not much more that i can tell you. sorry man.
