97 Civic loses ECU memory when car is turned off. Suggestions?
Hey there,
I recently have been failing inspection due to 3 not ready monitors; EVAP, o2, and CAT.
I posted a while back regarding anything else I should check before heading into a mechanic, but no real response as I was pretty much clueless at that point if that was the case.
Turns out, I drove to my friend's shop and he ran a scan on my car after driving it there (~30miles) and it's confirmed CAT and EVAP have turned "Ready", o2 was still pending Not Ready, but it may be due to not completing a drive cycle; regardless - one not ready will not fail me. With the OBDII scanner still hooked up; we restarted car and those 3 were back to "Not Ready"
My question now...
The backup fuse is good. For ***** and giggles, I did replace it (upon removing, my radio reset - proving my previous was OK), and now a new fuse is in. I read around here about something with the C10 connector and a few other options to investigate.
Has anyone else had a problem like this? Would anyone be kind enough to provide a few trouble shooting steps I can provide to my buddy so he can check them out on an off-day?
** Special note: This car did get flooded out 2 years back during the hurricane. Believe the one before Sandy. I assumed this could've shorted out the ECU, but for the past 2 years I've had no issues with the car's performance and it still drives like a beauty. So it seems more related to the ECU's constant power (in maintaining records of it's readiness monitors).
Thanks guys!

Find an ECU pinout for your car. There should be a pin designated for memory/backup or some of the like. Probe it with the key off. You should have 12v. If not, go to the back-up fuse and probe on both sides of the fuse connector. You should have power on one side. If you do you have a break in the wire between the fuse and the ECU. If you don't have power on one side you probably have a break between the fuse and wherever it gets it 12v source from.
If you have 12v at the ECU then you probably have an issue with the ECU.
Check all of the ECU grounds for continuity also.
I'm not super familiar with the exact circuitry but that's how I would go about trying to chase it down.

do you have a radio in the car? im asking because if the memory on the radio is the same memory for the ecu. the only other thing on that circuit is the heater control. I ran into the same problem you are having and the back up fuse under the hood was blown.

I have replaced that back up fuse twice, for ***** and giggles; although radio has not reset. When I do switch out this fuse, though - the radio DOES go into 'Demo Mode' as if the memory was reset... So the fact it doesn't do that every time I start the car counts that issue out.
