97 Civic 1500 transmission problems?
I'm looking at buying a 1997 Honda Civic Vti but when at the caryard the salesmen told me not to get a 1500cc model as the transmissions on them are rubbish and keep having problems! I dont know much about transmissions but wouldn't the transmission for a 1500 and a 1600 civic be the same? If not has anyone heard anything which backs up the salesmens point? I'm looking for an automatic by the way. Thanks for any help in advance

Both the 1.6 litre SOHC engines and the 1.5 litre SOHC engines use very similar transmissions. The gearing might be different, but they're largely the same IIRC. Here in the US all '96-'00 Civics have 1.6 litre engines, and those are the cars I'm most interested in, so they're what I remember the best.
The cars you're talking about have D-series engines (SOHC engines produced by Honda). Often these manual transmissions have problems with the input shaft bearings. I've had Honda technicians tell me this is a common problem and they usually attribute it to design issues.
The CVT aka HMM transmissions are best to steer clear of though, as RS2 mentioned.
I assume you're talking about the Civic VTi models with the D15Z7 (EK3), right? They come with a manual or a CVT (no normal auto). Those are the only 1.5 litre Civics for that generation that I know about being in New Zealand. Then again, a lot of Japanese market vehicles are imported to New Zealand.

I am new to the civic world. I am looking to buy a 96 auto DX w/225,000 miles on it. Other than the transmission not shifting when it should its all good.
Its sluggish uphill, doesn't downshift like it should or what would be considered normal. On straightaways it holds longer than should, only by a couple of seconds, before shifting. Any ideas Or am i fine? THank you guys for your time and help.
