Default 96 dx b series swap. ex wiring harness yes or no?

basically it is this, i know the ex harness will work but what about the post cat O2 sensor? and how different is the dx harness from the ex? less the obvious. KS, Vtec, and oil switch. is it worth buying the ex harness? i can get it under 300 new, or just use the dx harness? i have a jdm 98 b16 for it with a p73 ecu.

I would use stock 96dx wiring harness and add or modify the wires you need. bb

Use the stock harness its not that hard to add the wires you need and youll still need to add a wire on the ex harness anyways for the knock sensor I believe.

the obd2 ex has a knock sensor

but here is the problem. it is a dx. the dx has the 2 o2 sensors up front. the ex has the post cat o2 under the car. are there any differences between those 2? and are the distributor plugs there? both of them? i cant remember. i have done many eg and ef swaps. only one ek and it was with an ex already.

You can use either harness that you want. Just use the 96-98 harnesses on 96-98 cars and 99-00 harnesses on 99-00 cars.

As far as the 96-98 is concerned, I would honestly use the EX harness and add the 2nO2 wires. Either DX/EX harness you use, there will be a lot of plugs that you need to extend, so just be prepared for that.

A 99SI ecu isn't a logical choice for a 96-98 chassis. The 99SI harness only has 2 ECU plugs on it, the 3rd plug comes from the cabin harness. The 96-98 harnesses, have all 3 ecu plugs on them. I would use a 96DX harness before I used a 99SI harness because it will be less work.

yes i agree with tony, i made a mistake using the si harness, cause you have to rewire the interior plug and its a bitch

THe EX one is easier but if you are comfortable with wiring, the DX will work just as well.

I have the pinouts listed and plugs that need to be swapped on my swap site in my sig.

Good luck......

i have been down this road with the 97 ex i did. but the thing about the dx harness, is the fact that the ex has the after cat 02 under the car. but if the 2 distributor plugs are the same i am good. and i did find out the hard way about the 99-00 harness before. this is the first dx i am doing. thanks for the help.

i used the EX harness so much easiar......remember you have 2 rewire the IAC if you use the DX harness since the DX uses a 3 wire setup while the EX uses a 2 wire setup.....

so if its an 00 cx and your dropping a 00 si motor(with 00 si ecu) in it...you can use the 00 si harness with no problems? do you still have to wire for vtec and the like?

if you use the 00 harness with the 00 engine and an 00 ecu, no rewiring is needed. plug and play.

Life is good with an SI harness. All you will probably need to add is the 2ndO2 plug.

No differences between the two, both have pre and post cat 02 sensors, thats how it is on all OBD2 vehicles, one to monitor the air/fuel mixture, the other to actually monitor the condition of the cat. just keep your dx wiring harness, it will be an easy mod. Since you said its a JDM motor, the knock sensor will not be a problem considering it doesnt have one, at least I know the OBD1's didnt.
