Did you put some neverseize on the raised parts of the backing plate where the shoes sit? They run right on the metal and can squeak if theres no lubrication there. Do not use oil or grease for lube here, use neverseize.

I would suggest pulling the drum off and sand on the shoes a bit and chamfer the edge of the shoes, scuff up the drums a bit and clean everything up with brake kleen and let them dry. The noise you're describing to me is the same noise I've gotten after cleaning and adjusting brakes during services at work.

OOOOoooorrrr you could just switch to disc!!

The easiest thing would be to get 99-00 Si rear disc brakes, the complete changeover with the trailing arms, rotors, calipers, e-brake cables, etc. If you click on the FAQ at the top of this forum you will find a few write-ups on the conversion.

Maybe when you wore the brakes down the drums are worn out?
