96 Civic Ex Without ABS?
I got a 1996 Civic Ex. Got the brakes done about a year ago and when i did, the mechanic told me that i do not have ABS on my car. I am not sure how to check if i do have ABS. But i was just reading this https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/civic-ex-1992-1995-w-o-sun-moon-roof-2476900/.
If the Eg Ex came with ABS, should the EK?
after he changed my rear brakes, i keep getting some tapping noise when i brake. you cant hear it when i start to brake, but once the car slows down to like 25mph and lower, you can hear a tap tap tap from behind. also when i got them done, like right after i went to school and when i got out of my car, my rear brakes smelled as if they were burning.
can any 1 address both issues?

if you have rear drums, then no you don't have abs. if your rear brakes are disc, then yeah, more then likely you have abs.
now, for the tapping part, the drums, did he replace the drum or use your old ones? if he used your old ones, then the surface might be a little off/warped.
the burning smell, how hard are you breaking? and what pads did you get?

Re: 96 Civic Ex Without ABS?
ummm... i apologize for being dumb, but what lines are those? like what color are they?
but i do not have disc brakes at the rear.
dude used new drums and he told me it was normal for it to burn at first. "so they can get broken in" and im not braking hard. just braking normal at any speed. the pads, i have not checked what brand they are. i will be checking that today since i have to adjust the brakes since the pedal moves in a little and the e-brake pulls up alot.
EDIT: also it doesnt smell like its burning anymore. at first for like a week straight it did. but now its just the tapping noise that is a constant annoyance to me

well if he used all new parts and cheap pads, it all just needs to seat in/break in. the rear shoes for the drums well be okay after a few more stops and the smell well go away. you don't have to worry, but do adjust the e brake though, should be 6-7 clicks.

the smell has gone away after about the 1st week that they were installed.
lol i am SURE its more than 6-7 clicks as the e-brake pulls up almost all the way up.
im just going to buy a drum brake calibrator

Re: 96 Civic Ex Without ABS?
That aurgument works for the '92 - '95 civics, at least to some degree (most Si hatches are 4 wheel disc, non abs, some select '94 Sis are 4 wheel disc with abs), it doesn't work for the '96 - '00s EXs had optional ABS, but all came with rear drums. '99 - '00 Sis came with rear discs (the only USDM 6th gen civics to do so) but no ABS. In fact the only 6th gen civic in north america to get both rear discs and ABS are the Canadian '99 - '00 SiRs, and I still have to confirm that they do indeed have ABS. As far as the EX sedans go, ABS was only optional on manual transmission EXs in '96 it was unavailable for the rest of the production run, it was available on automatics for all years.

I never said that it did or didn't, only that the only year it was even available on a manual transmission 6th gen was '96. It was an option on all automatic 6th gens. There should be an ABS light in the gauge cluster that lights up when you turn the key to accessory (like the CEL, oil light etc) its easy to tell even at a glance under the hood if you know what you're looking for.

Re: 96 Civic Ex Without ABS?
a few lights on my cluster dont work. like my gas light. and im not sure if any other lights dont work. so if there IS and ABS light and the bulb is blown then i wont know. I want to look under the hood so: 1) i can learn where its located and how it looks and 2) so i can know if i have it. lol.
i also need to know if i have it cuz my CV joint is broken and i need a new axle cuz all the grease is out of that rubber thing. and there are some for ABS and some without it. and i dont want to get the wrong one

When in doubt order an ABS axle, they work in both ABS and non ABS civics, the only difference is the ABS versions have a toothed ring on the outer joint.
