Default 94 Sol vtec backfiring when cold

Hey guys, for the past 2 weeks or so my car (94 sol b16a3) has been backfiring but it only occurs while cold. Once I let it warm up it seems to be fine. I haven't checked anything because I don't know what i'm looking for. One thing I know is that one of the previous owners had to get a "helicoil" installed and now the helicoil is stuck to the sparkplug in the far left cylinder. I'm getting a new motor installed this summer so I figured it would be pointless in getting another one installed/fixed. Could fouled plugs cause the backfiring. The last time I did a tune-up I couldn't change the left plug due to the helicoil backing out with the plug. Someone suggested in finding a plug a little bigger and trying to make it catch thread. Would this be a real option? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My F22B2 had a issue with pre-detonation. Turns out because i was such a high octane fuel it wasn't firing properly because the compression isn't high enough. You might be using too high of an octane or too low of an octane fuel. Could possibly be the timing. Which you can slightly adjust on the dizzy. Loosen up three bolts on the dizzy and try turning it.

No codes at all, but now that you mention it, it does smell rich sometimes when i get out of my car. I've used premium gas ever since i've had the car though.

try using a lower octane fuel like the 87 and go through a tank or two and see if anything changes.

I believe the B16a3 engine runs on high octane fuel.

Does the CEL work?

Yeah my gas lid says premium fuel only. As far as the light goes, the light comes on when I turn on the key so I'm assuming the light works.
