93 civic D16?? help
hay guy. my ej having engine problem..
cel came on - code 17, if i recall correctly it speed sincer.
my car is an auto, but it will do a downshift at time then upshift.
most of the time it will switch up n down a few time within 1-5 second.
it does that around 60+mph. i dont think that is healthy.
there are time when it should of shift up but would not. so i'll be runing on 3rd gear on 3-4+ rpm. will this problem hurt my car.
thankyou guy.

Re: 93 civic D16?? help
you should leave it in drive.
why are you shifting your automatic?
anyway.. the VSS is on the top rear of the transmission. the Y/B wire is battery voltage with key on and the black wire is the ground. The Y/W wire is a 5-12 volt reference. while spinning the VSS you should see the Y/W wire go from 5-12 volts.

Re: 93 civic D16?? help
a speed sensor will not mess up your transmisison.
the only way it "could" do damage is if your speed sensor actually broke in half or something but that is something that everyone (you, me, OP) is in danger of doing but it rarely ever and possibly has never happened.
you can ride all day with no speed sensor installed and throwing code 17 for 100k miles and no harm will be done.

Re: 93 civic D16?? help
sorry.. i completly misread OP post. i thought he was manually shifting the car. and then your post sounded like teh VSS would mess up the tranny.
constant shifting would cause more heat in the tranny area and i dont think your tran cooler could or can keep up with that type of heat.
ona diffrent note.. it is possibly for a VSS to send mix signals to your ECU telling it to shift at diffrent times but i didnt think a single VSS could cause this type of problem. you might have two problems.
did these problems happen right at the same time?

hay first of all... i want to thank all u guys...
i believe i found the vss connector. it sure is far back from the tranny.
here my situation, yeah the speed meter is off, not moving at all which is what it should do. every things work find. although there is one problem. as im counting the gears shift, the tranny only shift up to 4th gear. i let my 2nd-4th gears shift a 3rpm same for 1st gear but some time it shift early. i count all the shifting, when it reach up to 4th gear at 3rpm which should shift to 5th gear, but it wont do so even if i pressure the acceleration pass 3rpm a bit. since it wont shift to 5th gear at all this give my engine a mid-aggressive sound/power. there are time my tranny will shift to 5th gear leaving me on 2-2.5rpm at 65-70mph. so i was wondering if that 4th gear not wanting to shift to 5th gear leaving me w/ mid engine aggressiveness will do any harm to the tranny or engine.....
thankyou....
