92 Civic Hatchback Key Wont Turn
Hey, Just gotmyself a 92 Civic Hatchback Manual from a impound auction. Mainly got it because of the engine. B18c with a b16 head. Anyways. The front was a bit damaged needed to replace the radiator and the computer was stolen. i want to test the engine before i put any money into the car but i cant get the key to turn. I currently swapped my 95 automatic computer in there to try and start it but the key will not turn. Wheels are not locked but i tried that anyways. Also i have tried turning the key without the computer, and even without the battery. Still the key does not budge. i am certain now that it is the ignition. but honestly i know nothing about cars. This is going to be the car i hope to learn everything on. Anyone have any idea i should check before replacing the ignition?

Huh - that does put you in a bit of a pickle. Now - sometimes my key gets stuck in my ignition and I need to turn my wheel and fiddle with it to get it to work. I suspect, though, that this is not your problem. Could the original owner have replaced the ignition? Did thieves break it when they stole that other crap?
One unattractive option you have is to replace the ignition unit with one from the wreckers where they have the correct key. You can disassemble the wrecker's ignition and install the proper "lock plates". See this DIY for a bit of an explanation: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/diy-fixing-doorlocks-open-any-key-2237857/ (Note that to disassemble the ignition requires you to have the correct key to put it in position to take it apart - obviously this is a security feature.)

Alright. I think i agree with you. I think the ignition has been changed. And i think the key i have isn't the right one. I was looking up how to do this without the correct key cause i was told you need the key to take it out correctly. Also i was gonna have a key made but they said they dont make them from the ignition only from the doors.
So anyways what i found out online through research is that im suppose to take off the plastic covering around the wheel. Then i have to use a punch right above the white plastic part of my ignition and knock out some screws/bolts.
After that i should be able to throw a screw driver in the plastic and start it. And i could also just as easily throw in a used ignition from another 92 civic?
If anyone has a picture diy tut on how to do this. please. I will also try and find a camera and take some pictures of my wheel and ignition later.

When you turn the key to ON(II), do you hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds?
Is there bright white spark at all four plugs?
Any CEL codes?

if you have spark and the fuel pump primes... you could just have bad gas.. since you got it from an impound auction the car must have been sitting for some time.
i had a car once that i had sitting for a little over a month while i was doing some work on it.. once i got eveything bolted back up the car wouldnt start. tried all types things thinking my swap was bad.. ended up being the gas.
you can disconnect you fuel line up front and prime it a couple times and get a sample of the gas. if it looks anything like the one one on the left.. get ready to do some syphoning<sp?>
bad gas (LEFT), good gas (RIGHT)

Actually my uncle came over and showed mw how to check the sparks on the pluigs. Not getting any sparks. so gonna open that up tomorrow and check the coil and everything else. might just go get a new one. As tot he gas it was completly empty all must have evaporated. i already put in a couple gallons though. So im pretty sure its just the spark and it should run. Thanks for all the advice peeps.

Update... I found out the fuel pump wasnt going on. And followed some wires back. I guess he had a kill switch to the fuel pump and it broke off. Dangled some wires. Put them together and started the car. Worked perfectly. Did a compression test and got 240 in each spark plug hole. and the pistons look rounded from what i could see. Guessing they are Type R pistons. Thanks everyone for helping me out with these problems and getting it up and running!

DIY if you ever decide to replace your ignition cylinder tumbler to match the other door keys: http://www.d-series.org/forums/diy-f...-many-pix.html
The little numbered pins are available from Honda (cheap). Match it to the pins on your door tumbler OR I believe you can get the number from Honda if you show proof of reg.
