Default 4th or 5th gear?

this is more of a driving problem, it only goes out to people with D16's under the hood, or used to have a D16... GSR's etc. don't count...

When ur driving, and cruising around state roads (55 mph), what gear do u keep it in?

It seems when I put it into 5th it's a little light on power unless ur going 60-65+

Does anybody else have any thoughts about this? 'cause like, if u keep it in 4th ur obviously burning more gas, but that's what it needs to be at crusing speed and still have something if u put the pedal down..

Any thoughts or advice (and plz don't tell me anything stupid like "advice: swap" or "learn to drive better" or any stupid **** like that - I'd appreciate it...)

what i normaly do is just keep it in 5th until i see some one or if they pull up next to me i would drop it in 3rd. that way ull have power and ur at higher rpms. more throtle response in 3rd then 4th or 5th for that matter. hope this helps you.

umm, i dont even know how to answer that. you are asking a preferance question. i personally dont like buying gas at $3 a gallon, so if it will go in 5th its in 5th. usually around 45-50mph, unless im still accelerating. i get to desired speed, then 5th.

yea i think he was talkin bout accelration if you have it in 4th around 50-60 its not goin to redline that fast. thus this is why i would drop it into 3rd when racing on the freeway.

well, he said when "cruising" around 55-60, so i dont know. i mean either way, its preferance no right or wrong answer. hell i can downshift into second at 58mph w/ my VX tranny.

umm... then just cruise in 5th gear. if you want that extra acceleration when needed, then downshift. simple.

Yeah, sorry for the hard explanation, that's what I meant...It's like, most of the roads around me are 55 mph zones....so u can usually get away with 60 w/o anybody turning a head (including cops)... And it's like, when I put it in 5th and do about 60 mph, like, when I get to a lil hilll 'n alll I have to put it down to keep up with the same I was doing because it really doesn't have a lot of power in 5th...

So I guess it's really teh question, wha'ts better at 60 mph for gas mileage, putting the pedal down w/ the butterfly all the way open to keep going that speed, or shifting down into 4th with higher RPMs?

Yeah I realize this question's kind of vague, but any help is thx

Road tests have stated that 45-65 passing is best done in 3rd gear. Other than that, I generally try to keep my motor above 3k cruising.

Well when cruising you really don't need power

it's basically a median range. 4th or 5th is fine at that speed, if cruising on flat ground at 55mph, i'd prob just use 5th.

but my 5th gear is like you guy's 3rd gear. *shrugs*

lol my 5th gear is shorter than a vx 3rd gear

Aight, thanks, I think I got the kinks worked out a bit better now, obviously for highway speeds 5th is the best...for the roads around here, I figure I keep it in 5th it doesn't really matter that it doesn't have as much power as any of my other cars in 5th...I mean if I really need power and am losing speed on a hill I'll simply downshift, just seems like the D16Z6 in there doesn't really have power until 3k, so it is what it is, I'm stupid to be asking anyways, I beat on it so much that I probably get really shitty mpg anyways, so what's the big diff if I use 4th or 5th, 900 RPM diff on my tranny :-\

Thx for ur help, think I got it under wraps now

5th gear from 35 mph and up, it will pull 5th gear from 20 mph though.

Just a puny D15, right Bense
