3 choices, either 2 diff. motor swaps or a swap + boost
I currently have a d16y8 in my 97 civic ex coupe.. NOt enough power and the motor has 156k on it, and is leaking oil...
Thinking about getting a new motor within 9 months.. Not sure if I should boost a b18B, or swap in a b18c1 or b18c5. Keep in mind this is a DD, weekend warrior and that I don't have shitloads of cash ready in hand; don't want to spend more than 4k. But I will spend whatever I have to, to get it done properly.

B18B/Turbo would have been my choice about 2 years ago.
Never a B18C1 fan. Don't know why.
I picked B18C5! 200hp - straight drop - simple add ons - clean.....I'd swap for a black valve cover though.

What actual advice are you looking for?
Low on cash and a daily driver.....
- I'd stay away from turbo
- Clean B18C5 is $4500+
Looks like B18C1 is your way, IMHO. Any of these motors are highly reliable. Maintenance is about the same (work and money)...except a turbo, that's more. Don't forget it's also best to do some work on the motor once you get it; timing/alt./p.s. belt, water pump, plugs/wires/cap/rotor, fuel/oil filter, engine/tranny oil, etc.

Re: (fuckingcoupe)
why not just keep the y8 and put the 4k in it. you could make it pretty nasty w/ that much. but its your project and good luck on what ever you go with

x2... this would have been my choice, but the b18b boosted is a good one as well. Out of the 2 i think rebuilding/boosting your Y8 will still be the cheapest route. This is your DD and its a civic nonetheless. Drop as little as possible into it to make yourself happy. With a piece-toether turbo kit, rods, pistons and a tune you will still spend less than buying a B18b, swapping it in, boosting it and a tune.

Why....why do these kinds threads exist?
You know it has been covered before...
You know people have thought about this exact same crap...
But you post it anyways...
This ENTIRE thread is 100% personal preference...
If youre lucky you will get 1 person who has owned all of the setups youre wondering about...and then get their opinion. But thats not going to happen.
Figure it out on your own or search for the same topics that have been posted again and again and again.
Now, since you dont complain:
ls turbo is what i went with
