Default 2002 Honda Civic Oil Change

Hey,

I bought a new civic about 2 months ago... already i have 4000 miles on her. Im going to be doing the first oil change soon, myself. The owners manual tells me that a filter wrench is required! Is this true? Can I still do it myself without having to buy the wrench??? The car takes the same filter type (fram 7317) as my other car and i never used a filter wrench on it... Do i really need one of these things??

thanks for the info

You can use a screwdriver or some channel locks.

Don't worry about it. I do oil changes on these cars every day at work(Honda dealer). Just buy the expandable wrench if you want to make your life easier.

screwdriver?? i havent taken a look at the filter yet .. are there screws holding it in or what?? why the screwdriver. What seems to the the problem with the filter to require tools?! I usually just use my hand to unscrew it.

thanks for the quick feedback

One more thing. Please use genuine Honda filters & replace the drain plug washer and torque the drain plug to 33 ft lbs. If you want to get techy torque the oil filter to 16 ft. lbs. as well.

My dealer doesn't carry that small filter that the new Civic has. We use the same filter that are on pre 2001 Civics,Accord,Prelude etc.

I tried an old size filter on my 2002 civic and it bottoms out right when the gasket makes contact.

This is NOT HONDA quality at all.

Not even close. on your dealership and to Jay honda here for selling me incorrect parts and using them too

It's obviously different enough if Honda went through the trouble to make 2 sizes.
