1999 Civic Si speedo malf. help.
99 si
s4c trans (stock)
Speedometer has always worked perfect. One day out of no where it started jumping around randomly while driving, then eventually it stopped working altogether. I've had this problem in various other eg's etc. So I tried swapping the vss, no go, tried 4 if not 5 different units and still nothing.
I de-pinned the clip and cleaned the contacts double checked everything still no luck. Its running on a chipped obd1 p28 and I havent been able to try another ecu, though I've started to believe the problem may lie there. I also changed the trans cases maybe 3-4 months prior to failure, anychance something inside the trans came lose or similar? thanks in advance for all the help.

Re: 1999 Civic Si speedo malf. help.
I have a 95 ex and it did the exact same thing. I figured it was the vss too so i replaced it and nothin. Checked plugs etc etc. I came accross something online a while back and someone was saying the the solderings on the circuit board on the back of the cluster commonly crack over time and cause a poor connection to the speedo itself. They say it can be re-soldered and fixed. I havent got around to trying it but it my be worth a shot. If i find the link i will give it to you.

thanks for the link, though i was under the impression that if it was a cluster issue vtec would still work.

Re: 1999 Civic Si speedo malf. help.
i had this issue multiple times with different issues everytime the first time on my d16z6 my dizzy took a **** coil grounded and ran like poo then again it happened and the vss sensor went bad and also cleaned the connector cause it looked in bad shape recently on my b18c eg hatch while driving a lose ground wire in the engine bay on the thermostat caused issues with tach but fixed

Re: 1999 Civic Si speedo malf. help.
had the same problem in my civic a couple months after i did a ctr swap.
my cel was coming on giving me code 13 (i think) for vss. i googled that code or vss cel codes for honda and there is a service tech bulletin that describes a problem that will cause your issue.
trust me its how i fixed mine! mine was jumping all over like that and going crazy. it got to the point were the lights on the dash were actually pulsating.
the service bulletin will tell you that the engine harness behind the intake manifold is rubbing inside the bracket in which it sits and do to it touching the wires its blowing a fuse in the fuse block under the dash which is the eld fuse. that fuse controls speedo, alternator, and some other circuits. fix your harness (or do what i did and buy a oem harness from honda) and replace the fuse.
and you should fix your speedo problem.
