Default 1998 Civic EX shaking violently in first gear. Clutch?

My 1998 Civic EX shakes (or shivers) violently sometimes from stop to go in first gear (its a 5 speed). This only happens when the car has been running for a while (not while it has been sitting in the garage). It shakes when my foot is almost at the tip top of the clutch pedal and put I some gas.

Is this the clutch? All the other gears are fine. Is this dangerous for the car in the long run?

how many miles you talkin bout on the clutch? could just be gettin old. mine used to do it, however i replaced the tranny and since i had it all apart and didn't want to take it apart again, i replaced the clutch as well so it could have been either one. if it's only in low gears though i think the tranny. but before replacing the tranny check the clutch since it's cheaper.

My car only does this when I don't give it enough throttle when letting out the clutch in first.

Does it happen in reverse too?
Happens to me.

*EDIT*
Then again...
Could be my idling problem.

ok my car does this now too. i took it to my friend who works for honda and he looked at it. does your car make a whirly noise when getting pushed into first when it is moving? mine does. it turns out my syncros r out. at least thats what he told me. he checked my clutch and flushed my tranny fluid and it kind helped but not really. he said i just need a new tranny.

Driving a 1998 Civic LX with 125K on it. I am experiencing similar symptoms... violent front-end shaking in first and second gear. Sometimes it drives like usual, other times it will shake the whole car--all with the same clutch/gas release speeds and everything. To get around this, I push the clutch back in, and come back out with a lot more gas than normal. I kind of "power" through it.

I've also begun to notice that (again, sometimes) there's a brief scraping sound (like a glass cutter would make on glass) that happens right after the 1st or 2nd gear is fully engaged when I'm going up a steep hill.

Did anyone nail down what the shaking is, and perhaps it's related to this scraping sound? My only thought it the clutch. Thanks
