1996 civic DX won't idle
1996 civic DX HB ~150,000 miles
When it tries to idle it surges. It's around a 3 second cycle. idle goes real low for a second (real low, spudders like its going to die), then it picks up for a second, idles fast for a second then drops off again. If I turn on the A/C the idle is fine, its obviously higher since it has to turn the compressor but its steady and smooth. What could cause this bad idle, a bad IAC?
What can I do to correct it?

i would say for starters, take off the IACV and blast the **** outta it with carb cleaner. Sounds like the common honda IACV surging problem. I have never been able to get rid of mine. I just leave the head lights on all the time and it doesnt do it

Got a link to instructions? I haven't even been able to locate the IAC yet

It looks like this. Its on the back of your throttle body/Intake Manifold.. I think on a 96 it actually bolts to the throttle body though.
Where it says do not clean... it really doesnt hurt if you do, just flush it out a little with coolant or water before hooking back up.
Take out the 2 bolts, 1 sensor plug and a couple hoses. Spray carb cleaner in it really good. try to get the screen all clean. You can even take it a part a little and clean the spring and **** inside. I always spray them down with WD-40 before i put it back together

Awesome, thanks for the picture. The only other IAC sensor I've nessed with was on my Dodge truck and it looked like a light bulb
