An EK with R motor would be faster....

I would tell him to pick up a 96 hatch as cheap as possible (CX, high mileage, no body damage) and purchase a motor from a reliable source.

OR

Build a motor with choice parts and spend a little more upfront for a big payoff in the end. ITR block and crank, sleeved to 84.5mm, 11.5-12.5 pistons, Cunning ham rods (as light as possible) Cams= Toda D's or JUN 3's, JDM ITR tranny with ATS 4.929 FD, JUN UL fly, ACT street copper lined disc with HD pressure plate, JG intake mani or Toda ITB's, Standalone or some sort (AEM, Hondata, FAST etc...) 310+ injectors, fuel pump, FPR, Ericks 4-1 street/strip header with 3" collector, mugen hard bushing kit for the entire chassis,

Thats just some options.....I think in the end if he took his time and built a motor for himself he would save money......10G's total is not a whole lot to build a car unless he wants a close to stock motor and modify the interior/exterior with the rest of the money.....EK 4500-5500 + ITR motor 4800-6000 = 9300 to 11,500 trying to go lower will require a cheaper EK and a lower line motor like B18C1 or B16.....I would let him know 10K is just the begining

after the hatch is purchased, build the suspension then save for a swap. what purpose does this supposed hatch deem to serve? that is really the question as to what your friend should do next. i'm still going for the education idea though.

i like my handling i had wit the ek then i do wit my bro's 240, but both cars is fun, i'ma get another ek when i'm done wit school....you can find a decent ek for about 5500 in my area, thats enough to do a b18c1 swap wit suspension or just the R motor, and save for suspension...good luck... ohyea, theft is a issue wit the honda and not as high wit a 240...

im trying to convice him to get a hb, and i wanna present him with a nice blob of info on what he can do.
hes 50/50 performance, if he runs a 14 hes happy, so something like a gsr with i/e is good. hes gonna want rims, spoon duckbill style spoiler, all clear headlights, stuff like that...

either way, he's probably only going to be able to afford a swap or a decent suspension setup with the left over money. he needs to formulate a plan and stick to it. he should research it himself instead of having you ask vague questions by proxy on this board where you're going to get the same results: swap and suspension or suspension and swap. anything can be done to his car if he has the money and a willing to spend it. people are mentioning an education because it's witty and sarcastic and entertaining, but in all reality that is the best bit of advice given yet. sure, everyone could rattle off a ton of parts and brands, etc. but that isn't going to help him any. why should he buy some tein coilovers when he just wants to cruise around town? he needs to decide what he wants to do with HIS car, then figure out which parts are neccessary to achieve HIS goal.
