Whoever told you that obviously doesn't know... I had the reverse of that - D16Y8 (1.6) tranny on the D15B7 (1.5) motor in a 1994 Civic DX. The bolt pattern is the same on all 1.5/1.6 SOHC motor to tranny from 1988-00.

All d series are interchangable.
Your best bet is any 92-95 tranny, esp. the Z6, they seem to have the least amount of breakdowns and problems. Anytime me or any of my friends have had transmission problems, it was because of it being 96-00. I beleive it has something to do with the actual shifting mechanism inside the transmission, they used a diff one starting in 1996, im not 100% sure on that, but thats what i had read once. You'd have to ask the moderator Bense, hes a transmission expert.
