Default [HELP!] '98 Civic, stalled, now won't start!

I'm having a bit of a problem with my '98 honda civic that I was hoping I could get some advice on.

Firstly, about a month ago the car began to stall slightly for 1-2 seconds as I put my foot on the gas from a stopped or slowed position. The gas response otherwise seemed ok.

The car no longer starts! I had noticed that the car took longer than normal to start over the past month. Now it just turns over and over and it even feels like it wants to, but simply won't.

So I decided to replace the distributor cap/rotor and spark plugs. When I removed the old cap a tiny gold spring fell out and onto the ground, which I cannot find for the life of me.

Now, my new cap did not come with this little spring which seems like it fits to some kind of secondary contact on the right side of the cap. I called my mechanic friend and asked if I should try to start it without the spring. He said he'd never heard of any spring inside a civic cap and to go ahead and try it.

The car still won't start. I called the auto parts store that sold me the cap and they said that the unit doesn't come with a spring, but they couldn't tell me if it needed it to work. I've tried two other auto-parts stores trying to find it, but no one has it.

The manufacturer of the cap is "TEC". I couldn't find a way to contact them to ask them this simple question; Is the spring a necessary component?

What else could cause my car's symptoms?

This car is my livelihood, any help at all would be much appreciated.

Does the fuel pump prime?

Do you have spark at the plugs?

Is the CEL ON?

Not sure, but there may be a spring at the top of the coil:

the spring is from the coil like the picture says...replace the coil if you can find one...someitmes u have to replace the whole distributor assembly.

yeah, it seemed to connect the coil to the cap, so it is a must have? I just talked to my local Napa auto parts. The spring indeed comes with the ignition coil and no any other assembly.

It costs 120 dollars! I just need the spring

Does anyone know if there as an alternative?

Check out a junk yard. I guess that's your only option if you want to find this cheap.
