*URGENT HELP NEEDED - re. '00 1.6L SOHC EX/Si Coupe*
I am getting a faint sort-of whistling sound from the motor of my '00 Honda Civic EX/Si. The sound only appears when the car is idling, but while driving, it dissapears. I checked around the motor myself, and everything seems to be in tact, and in good working order.
Can anybody tell me what this precisely could be caused by. A mechanic told me that it could be a loose thread or something stuck onto the serpentine belt, but I seriously doubt that. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
BTW - Motor is a '00 1.6L SOHC VTEC, w/ less that 40,000 Km's on it.

I tried many things. It is probably a belt or a pulley - like you said.
It generally appears at low RPMs but as soon as the engine is revved up a bit, it stops. Maybe it could be due to the extreme fluctuations in temperature - all the expansion and contraction in the metals (I don't know if that is entirely possible).

Where us the idler pulley located? I'd like to clean it out, maybe there is some excess road salt resins in there from the long winter we had.

dose it squeak?
My AC idler pulley squeaks, annoying as ****. Turn the AC on and off and see if that effects it.

It's a repetitive squeeking/whistling sound. I don't think it's a big problem. It does not seem to affect the motor at all. Still drives and feels the same.

Yea but when it comes to engine noise, you don't want to assume. Do you have an intake? Make sure nothing is rubbing against metal or anything like that, things not bolted down and such.
Try and isolate, then take it in.

1) Tell your mechanic that your car doesn't have a serpentine belt.
2) It's probably not a belt, as belts will squeal loudly, not whistle faintly.
3) If it happens at idle, but goes away while driving, it may be air whistling through the idle air passage in the throttle body. More noticeable if you have an aftermarket intake. When driving along, does it make the noise if you let off the gas?
4) I can barely remember when my car was quiet enough to allow me to hear a "faint sort-of whistling sound."

EX = US 1.6L SOHC Coupe
Si = Canadian 1.6L SOHC Coupe
The Si in the States, is called the SiR here in Canada. Don't ask me why Honda did this, I think they just wanted to confuse us.
I figured out the problem though.
It involved the intake as one of you had previously mentioned.
