Default *** SUSPENSION PROBLEM - Please help!!! ***

Hi!

I have a 1996 DX coupe and have a big problem...

I get this awful HUMMING NOISE coming from my front end (probably the drivers side but not 100% sure)... the sound is constant and DOES NOT CHANGE when accelerating/decelerating... it is always the same...

Loud and deep humming... like HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU all the time... not HU HU HU HU HU (like the wheel bearing sounds)... just HUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

The sound can be described as LOUD ROAD NOISE (much louder than normal)

The only thing that is very interesting is that this noise gets QUIETER (almost gone) when driving on smooth surface (new built roads - smooth) and it gets louder when driving on rough surfaces (old roads, dirty roads)...

The sound is ALWAYS there... no matter if the car is on and running, off and crusing (I tried shutting off the engine), whether its in gear or not, clutch pedal pushed or not, the sound is always there... so I guess it isn't a transmission problem...

I tried different tires - summer (195/50/15) and winter (185/70/14) and the noise is always there so I guess it is not the tire problem...

I changed the following parts:
- wheel bearings (Koyo - Honda OEM)
- differential bearing
- brake rotors
- brake pads
- CV boots and regreased the joints
- tranny fluid
- the WHOLE TRANNY (EX)
- wheel alignement - GREAT NUMBERS

... and the noise is STILL THERE...

The car is slightly lowered (-35mm / 1.5inches) all around with WEITEC springs on stock shocks...

So please HELP ME!!! I do not know where to go or what to do...

What can cause this humming noise???

Pleaseeeeeeee!!!!

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.I TO thought it was my tires .i was riding on toyo proxes which make a good amount of road noise so i paid it no mind.when i put a set of falkens on some noise disappeared.when i rebiult my front end with new brakes shocks and wheel bearings it went away.from your list that is the only thing you still didn't change you will need a shop to pop the old ones out and press in the new ones.this will also be a good time to relpace any worn wheel studs.

YOU CAN TRY NEW SHOCKS . WHEN SHOCKS WEAR OUT THEY TEND TO NOT DAMPEN AS WELL AND CAN CAUSE SOME ROAD NOISE.OTHER WISE TAKE IT TO A SHOP AND LET THEM SEE WHAT THEY CAN FIND.MAY EVEN BE A CONTROL ARM BUSHING OR BALL JOINT.GOOD LUCK

OK, I'll try to do that...

I will try to use friend's car to swap the parts so I don't have to buy new stuff if it isn't broke...

So my question is:
- will knuckles from hatchback (D15Z6) fit on my coupe?
- will front shocks from hatchback fit on my coupe?

Both cars are 1996...

All this stuff should fit without a problem.

If your friends car hatch 9.4" brakes and your coupe has 10.2" brakes, the two knuckles are NOT interchangeable without switching brakes too. Shocks should work just fine though...

Anything that spins (like bearings/axles) will not make a constant hum, it will whoosh, or change pitch as you go faster...

If your shocks are bad, you should be able to see wet spots on the body coming from the piston seal area. Also, your car should be annoyingly bouncy (not to be confused with stiff).

You may want to inspect all your bushings. Look at the ones in the shock hats & all the control arm bushings (maybe even your engine mounts). If one has broken rubber, road vibration can cause the metal on metal contact of the inner & outer bushing sleeves to resonate. If the car has been lowered, also make sure the shocks have been put back together with all the right parts too...

you say it doesn't change with the speed of the car?? so like say you inch up at a stop light, you hear HUUUUUUUU and you stop and it goes away. or are you mistaken and it DOES change with the speed of the vehicle? you might have your brake lines twisted up, and they're rubbing on the side of your tire. I'm betting that's what it is

OK, here is how it goes...

If I am at stop I hear nothing... immediatelly when I start moving it starts HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ...

This sound is EXACTLY THE SAME if I go 10 mph or if I go 100 mph... EXACTLY THE SAME... there is no change... always ANNOYING HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

The ONLY change I notice is between rough and smooth surfaces...

If I drive on smooth road (new and clean asphalt) the noise almost disappears...

But if I drive on rough surface like old and cracked asphalt or dirty asphalt (mudd, little stones) this noise is there...

And about rubbing...

I checked EVERYTHING and there is NO RUBBING ANYWHERE...

are your brakes dragging maybe? how about this.... jack up your car and spin each wheel freely by hand. you're bound to find something.

maybe the rear wheelbearings are gone, not just the front??

Don't you think I've tried all that... wouldn't it be strange that I replaced wheel bearings and didn't try to spin the wheel? and wouldn't it be even stranger that I wouldn't notice brakes dragging when I disassembled the brake system (when I took of the knuckle to replace the bearing)...

And the sound is comming from the front end and that excludes rear bearings which are by the way in mint shape...

Anywayz, thank you for suggestions

I had something similiar happen to me twice now.

Once when the idiot shop didnt place the brake shims for the pads in correctly and they vibrated like, had the exact same effect your having.

I other was after i turned my coilovers down, I thought it was the fender well covers rubbing but it wasnt, i was rubbing the airbox peice on the passenger side in front of the wheel, and a small plastic clip on the drivers side top rear area, that was was really hard to find as its black and blends in, so you dont see it easyily that its being filed down and i was only dropped 40mm when it started. if you can get on a brake tst machine or a dyno, which is what i did and lets someone ideal the car around 30mph while you try and focus in the noise more.

hope that helps a bit, i know how anyone that humming can get

we had an acura legend a few years ago. one of the tires was mounted and it was off a little bit, and it was the way the tire wore. it was just one tire and it would allways hum. barrow a buddys wheels and replace the noisy wheel and see if it fixes it.

I tried with different tires but with no luck...

The noise is a bit quieter with 185/70/14 tires but it still there and noticeable...

Could it be the CV joint?

Could it be the spring/shock?

What could it be????????????????''

I tried changing ALL 4 TIRES...

I was driving on summer tires then I changed them for winter tires when winter started (all 4 wheels)... then I also tried to put on ALL 4 of friends rims which are 17" and have 215/40/17 dimension... the noise is still there WITHOUT ANY CHANGE...

CV boots are new (2 months) they are not cracked and CV joints (both inner and outter) are regreased properly...
