Putting into reverse while rolling backward
2007 si sedan. if i am already rolling backward, not even fast, and try to put into reverse it will grind. sometimes i have to roll just a tiny bit to get into into reverse in the first place. wondering if i am the only one experiencing this. thnx
you should never roll backwards while shifting into reverse not even a lil bit. the reverse gear is not a helical cut gear and has no synchros. it straight cut , if your at a dead stop and it grinds going in you may have an issue with your clutch or transmission.
ok, i guess that makes sense. also to clarify it's only sometimes that i have to roll a little to get it into reverse. i guess the teeth just arent lined up in those instances. thnx
if it doesn't want to go into reverse right away try shifting to 1st then back to reverse.

Reverse is the only gear that isn't in constant mesh. When you select reverse, you're actually sliding the gear into position to make the teeth contact. Thus, if the car isn't completely stopped, it will grind.
Solution: Don't select reverse while the car is in motion.

You should be at a stop when putting it into reverse. It even says that in the manual.
As for not being able to put it into reverse, throw it into 5th or 6th (or any gear, really) and then try throwing it into reverse.

I'm probably guilty of this too but everyone in this forum repeats something 3-4 times over. he got a good answer with post #4 and everyone afterwards said the same thing.
No car should be put into reverse while it's moving, whether it has a reverse lockout (like the Si) or not.
I know it's been said, but it seems some people think this is something specific to the Si.
The reason the SI has a reverse lockout is mainly because it is 6 speed, and (w/out the lockout) it could theoretically be easy for an inexperienced driver to mistakenly put the the car into reverse instead of 6th. Still, just because a car does not have a reverse lockout does not mean it is good for the car to pop it in while moving.

wel if you can do it properly than why not do it.
if you cant apply the concept correctly and will ruin your transmission, dont do it.
I did it all the time in my 6spd LS1 rx7 and in my STI w/ reverse lockout and in my super boring Civic LX. no difference, you just need to be able to do it well, its not something I would have my mother or grandma try to master as a driving skill.

all hondas do this! Try putting it in first and then reverse. That ussually works .OH AND JUST TO LET U KNOW REVERSE IS A STRIGHT CUT GEAR WITH NO SYNCRONIZER. u HAVE TO BE ALL THE WAY STOPPED NO MATTER WHAT....
