For the most part headgaskets go bad for 2 reasons, poor maintenance, coolant needs to be changed, many people do not, then the coolant can cause electrolysis can corrode the head, almost like eating it away.

Also, if the can runs hot people do not shut it off, like if the thermostat or hose goes.

180k miles on mine before I had to replace but it was caused by a cracked radiator.
