Engine will not idle in neutral
I have a 2005 Honda Civic VTEC, unfortunately with an automatic transmission. The problem that I am having is when I shift to neutral going down a hill (where safe) instead of staying on the throttle wasting gas, the engine will not idle anymore. The RPMs drop, but not down to idle. The RPMs used to go from about 2500 to around 900, which is a normal idle, but now the RPMs drop from about 2500 to 1800, and will not come down until the car starts slowing down. When idling in neutral while sitting still, it idles at a normal 900 RPM. The other thing that I just noticed is that when the front of the car is on jack stands, if I start the engine in neutral, the wheels start spinning fast. If I press the brake, the wheels stop spinning, but when I let off the brake, the wheels start spinning as they would if it was in gear. It seems to me like it is not disengaging the gear completely. What is wrong? Thanks.
