Icon2 2008 Honda Accord with Moonroof problems

I have a friend with a 2008 honda accord and recently his moonroof stopped working all it would do is click like it was trying to do something. So it was stucked in vent position. He took it to the dealer and they took a quick look at it and told him the motor was out and it would be $1200 to fix it or $500 for them just to close it. He doesn't have that kind of money right now to spend on the repair.

He brought it over last night and after searching the internet we found the reset instructions. Followed it to the letter and it started working he got it to close and open and everything was fine. Today he was in the car and used it a few times and it was still working fine, then after he parked the car with it closed a few hours later he went out and tried to open it and it would not work again.

it is probably not the motor if reset command worked on it and it did work fine for awhile. The only thing I can think of is maybe the relay in the switch for the moonroof? Just curious if anyone has any insight on what the issue can be?

So what's the reset instruction? Maybe that can help others for reference.

What I used to reset the moonroof control unit.

1. Close driver’s door, leave it closed during the whole procedure.
2. Turn ignition to LOCK (0).
3. Press and hold the tilt switch, and turn the ignition to ON (II).
4. Release the tilt switch, and turn ignition to LOCK (0).
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 four times.
6. Check if the AUTO OPEN and AUTO CLOSE function still work. If they still work, the AUTO functions have not been cleared, go back to step 1. If AUTO functions have been cleared, go to step 7.
7. Press and hold the moonroof open switch for at least 3 additional seconds after the moonroof is fully opened.
8. Press and hold the moonroof close switch for at least 3 additional seconds after the moonrood is fully closed (tilted).
9. Confirm that the moonroof is reset by using the moonroof AUTO OPEN and AUTO CLOSE function.

Yea those are the re-set from the service manual I have.

This could be anything from the moonroof switch to one of the relays - there is one for open and one for close.

Testing the switch is where I would start....as pulling the headliner to get to the motor tests doesn't sound like fun.....funny how the manual talks about the bulb in the test

Thanks for the info on the switch. When I see him this weekend I will help him troubleshoot.

On the subject, where are the open and close relays located?
