2006 Accord - Loud click when first applying brakes after changing direction like forward to reverse
2006 Honda Accord LX K24 4cyl
Brakes make a very noticeable click, or "clunk" noise whenever I apply the brakes after changing direction, like forward to reverse or vice versa.
I did a quick search and saw someone said that its the pads shifting but the thread looked ghetto so I just wanted to make sure
Thanks in advance
EDIT 4/21/2008
UPDATE!!!
Just put on new aftermarket pads (FederalMogul Thermoquiet) and the click noise is GONE.
Apparently an issue with the OEM Honda pads (both pads had a huge crack down the middle too, both pads identically cracked)

There have been many posts about this on different forums. The dealerships say it's the brake pads shifting around in the calipers. The V6 models don't seem to have this problem (different set-up). Maybe they have come up with a solution by now, but I doubt it.

OK that doesnt sound bad. I thought it might be the rotors clickin back and forth but the pads makes more sense.

Accords, CR-Vs, Odysseys and Pilots have this complaint regularly. Usually referred to as pad slap. If it's been confirmed to be pad slap it's nothing to really worry about. My '97 does it as well from time to time.

definetly brake clap. I have the same prob on my 06 2.4 sedan. It freaked me out at first thinking it was axles but I consulted with a good friend of mine and I trust his honda knowledge 101%

I was just about to post a new topic. Glad to know this is common (normal).

The V6 Accords have different shims, and retainers, and don't seem to have this problem. At least mine doesn't.

How could it be the brakes, cause when I shift it will make a loud click even before I apply any brakes

I think there are two different things here. First of, in my case, I have auto trans. And when I shift out of P, I do have to step on the brakes. And there is the "click" when it the sound of the transmission. I get that too.
But I think the OP (and me) is describing another sound once the car get's going often in a parking situation, so the brakes are first used.
I'll listen more carefully to see in my case.

Yeah the click of the auto shifter unlocking is one thing
Then theres the click when I brake, after changing directions, literally sounds like something shifting in the brakes (apparently the pads) makes complete sense

Even if the brakes are not applied they are still rubbing against the rotor. The clank sound may not be as loud, but it will still happen.
Sounds like one or two of you may be describing the ABS self-check. When you back out of your driveway, then put the car in a forward gear (for the first time) you will feel, and hear a slight grinding sound. This is the ABS self-check. This should not happen again, until the engine is stopped and restarted again.
