When did the CEL come on? Was it while driving or when first starting the car in the morning? Any misfires?

The light came on while driving and no misfire codes.

But the engine does seem to be running rough and I also notice that I'm wasting more fuel.

Hhhmmm, I am leaning toward valve adjustment simply because in my experience with this code, if you first start the car in the morning and get this code, it's usually due to leaking fuel injectors. Leaking fuel injectors will also cause a misfire upon cold start in the mornings as well.

I would start with a valve adjustment first. It costs nothing but a couple hours of your time if you can do the work yourself.

Is this something I can do at home? Do I need any special tools? Does a machine shop do that type of work?

On the V6, adjusting the valves is not something a "first timer" should jump into without getting all kinds of info.

First, you have to remove the intake manifold - suggest new gaskets so you don't create a new issue.

Then "if" you decide to do the rear - bank 1 - getting the adjustment correct can be a bit of a trick just because of the location.

You have not posted the "miles" on the car but if you are going to do this, removing the plugs makes it easier to spin the engne over as you are adjusting the valves on each cyl....so if you are close to 100K on the plugs you might as well go back with new ones.

So let me ask, are you hearing a "tap" from the engine when running?

The vehicle has 150k miles. I had the plugs changed about 20k miles ago but I've heard and been reading that I should of used either NGK or Denso plugs only. I am mechanically inclined and yes I hear a tapping or maybe a rattle noise when I turn on the vehicle.

Do you hear this "tap" at first start up or once the engine has warmed up and idles down?

Never said you couldn't do the work, just based upon the questions I thought you'd never adjusted valves before.

Again, I would invest ~$25 in a service manual - not a chilton or haynes book but a Honda service manual.

Sorry didn't mean it in a bad way to say I'm mechanically inclined. But I think i can do it from the videos I've seen. The noise is just at start ups once it's warm it's gone.

If it is gone once warm.....I'm begining to think it not a valve out of adjustment. Don't get me wrong they do get out of adjustment. I skipped doing it on the Pilot when I did the timing belt job (~120K) because I didn't want to mess with it. Sure enough, right at 150K I could hear "one" rapping away. No codes have ever come up on it.

As suggested it might be a leaking or dirty fuel injector. You could check the fuel pressure and see if there is a "drop" once the engine is shut off. If dirty, suggest pulling and cleaning or you can try some FI cleaner.

This still could be a lazy O2.

I've got my hands on some info off of all data thru a friend. For the that specific code it tells me to check fuel pressure if pressure is fine then step 2 is check valve clearance and adjust if necessary. If clearance ok replace injectors and reset the ecm/pcm with the HDS. I'm guessing this is a Honda factory scan tool. Then I have to do the ecm/pcm idle learn procedure. What's FI cleaner???

"FI cleaner" = fuel injection cleaner.

Yes I have a factory service manual for your car and have read everything it states for the code.

If you go for the adjustment, you'll need an intake/plenum gasket set, valve cover gaskets - tube seals should come with it, a feeler gauge.

Good luck with the valve adjustment.

Yea, there isn't a port. You got to tap into the quick connect fuel line, not sure if there a pre-made adapters or not, you might have to "fab" up something using some fuel line repair pieces - Dorman Products has all kind of repair fittings for these quick connect fuel lines.
