Default 2003 Honda Accord Tranny Problems

Hi, everyone!

i just bought a 2003 Honda Accord (4 cylinder; NOT a V6) with 140k miles on it.

I've been reading about all of the transmission problems with the 2003 model, and it's got me kind of worried, especially since I have to do about 6 hours of interstate driving this coming Tuesday.

Was it only the V6 model automatic transmission that was affected, or was the 4 cyl. model affected too? Did I just make a potentially bad purchase? The guy I bought it from was the original owner and kept the vehicle very well maintained. Over the past 10 years, the only maintenance that's been done on it besides standard fluid changes, tune ups and normal maintenance is the replacement of the O2 sensors. Other than that he's had no problems.

Thanks!

The 4 cylinders don't have a lot of failures. What does the transmission fluid look like? How's the level, color, and smell of the fluid? Are you having any problems with shifting?

Well, you should have done your research before buying it, not after. At any rate, I have never had any issue with any of my three Honda cars. My 1990 Honda Accord shifted harsher than any other cars I had owned but it worked fine. At first, I thought it was a defect on my car until I checked with the dealer. In fact, most Honda 4AT shifted harsh unlike the Nissan or the Toyota until around 2003 model. My 1993 Nissan Maxima shifted smoothly thru all the gears unless I stepped on it. The 5AT is fine on the I4 Accord engine because it is much weaker than the V6. The V6 has much more torque and HP that tends to wear out the 5AT sooner. The first 5AT on the V6 Accord has a slight design defect that could wear out the second gear because the AT oil pump does not lubricate it as well. Honda did have a recall to fix that problem in 2003.

I have same car with 270,976 on the clock. Just do the flush & fill every 30K and you're good to go.
