Icon2 2003 - 2007 K24 Accord Auto Transmission Fluid & Filter ?'s

I'm in the process of changing out the Transmission fluid on my 2003 Honda Accord EX Automatic. It is the 4 banger K24, incase you missed that in the title. I would like some clarification prior to starting the process.

1. How many quarts of Honda ATF-Z1 will I need for a drain & fill?

2. Does the K24 Auto have a serviceable transmission filter? If so, where is it located?

3. I will be doing 3 drain & fills within the next 1,000 miles, since I've neglected it in the past. Is there anything else that you would reccomend I do?

4. Is there anywhere I can get Honda ATF-Z1 for cheaper, since I will be purchasing a large quantity of it?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Happy Holidays!!!

1. 2.8-3.3qts
2. no filter just drain and refill
3. each time u drain and refill just run it thru all gears
4. only place to get honda atf is thru honda..maybe u can find it cheaper online

just make sure after ur last drain to change out the tranny drain plug washer so it doesnt leak

I did find that the 03-07 Accord's have external transmission filters. The part number for them is 25430-PLR-003. Any thoughts on this?

its true but they do not have any serviceble time frame, as in no need to change.

It's just an inline filter attached to one of the transmission cooler lines. #4 in this diagram:

They're about $20 from Honda. There is no service interval specification for them that I am aware of.

Right on! So technically, there is a filter, however, there is no need to service it. Works for me.

Now I just need to find somewhere that sells Honda ATF for less than $8.00/qt, if it even still exists. I need two cases.

You won't find it too much cheaper than that anywhere. ATF-Z1 doesn't carry a large markup.

Dagz! So much for trying to save a buck.

In anycase, I sucked it up, and pick'd up 4qts of Honda ATF Z1 last night at the local stealership @ $8.02/qt. I did a quick drain and fill, and I must say, that stuff was pretty much black in color. I plan on doing another drain and fill in 500 miles, and the third one in 1,000 miles from now. I will replace the filter on the 4th and final drain and fill in 2,000 miles. From there, Ill keep doing them in 15k mi increments.

Automatic filter(s) and fluid change question

I recently purchased a 99 Accord EX Coupe with a slippin tranny. Before I breakdown and buy or consider converting it to a 5speed, is it possible for me to (DIY) service the automatic tranny. This past weekend, I purchased some Valvoline over 75k mileage transmission fluid and a bottle of Lucas Transmission Additive. I would like to change the any all serviceable filters also. I believe that the tranny should be treated like an engine; if you change the oil change the filter. Also, have any of you DIYers tried a transmission flush job along with changing the fluids, filter(s)????

1. There is no replaceable filter on an F-series automatic transmission.
2. You should only be using Honda ATF-Z1 fluid.
3. Don't use additives. Waste of money. Especially any crap made by Lucas Oil.
4. You're not going to prolong the life of an already-slipping transmission by flushing it; if anything, you'll only accelerate failure. Return the fluids, get your money back, and put it toward a good used transmission, or a Honda remanufactured transmission. Don't go to any chain or local transmission specialty shops that advertise or quote a low initial price to get you in the door (i.e. $1000-1200); you'll end up spending a lot more in the long run. Do it right the first time and buy a Honda remanufactured transmission for $2300 with a 36 month/36,000 mile warranty.

Targa250R,

I'm really feeling as if automatic trannys' are nothing by ticking time bombs; it's only a matter of time before they cost the owner eveything.... What about simply converting it to an 5speed??? It seems as if for the amount for a automatic tranny, a owner mightest well, convert it to a 5speed manual... I can't see spending $2300 for a tranny, and I bought the car for less... Automatic trannys' is the worst inventions for cars; yes/no...

An automatic transmission is a weak point in any vehicle, and they are very expensive and difficult to repair in a majority of cases. I work in the auto service industry, and I only buy/drive manual vehicles if that gives you any indication of my standpoint. That's not to say that all manual transmissions are trouble free, but they are certainly much cheaper and easier to repair.

With that said, '98-02 Accord automatics (both 4-cylinder and V6) are exceptionally well known for transmission problems, much moreso than the previous and following generations. Honda did extend the transmission warranty on some models, but the '99 model year is no longer covered.

A manual conversion would indeed be cheaper than a remanufactured transmission, but it involves quite a lot of details. You may want to try to source a good used automatic trans (or at least get an idea of pricing) before you make any decisions.

This is an old thread, I know. But I am new here.
My '03 Accord 2.4L w/ automatic transmission is seems to be leaking transmission fluid. The engine leaks oil, too. The trans is wet on the bottom w/trans fluid.
Any thoughts appreciated.

13 year old car may need seals and gaskets, maybe more, but, don't pour in stop leak.
