Are you talking about the rubber gasket on the radiator cap?? I don't remember seeing any rubber gasket that comes off the top tube from the radiator.

Radiator shouldn't be empty.

The overflow should fill up more when the engine is hot, then as the engine cools it should suck the "overflow" coolant from the tank back into the radiator/engine.

When you removed the rad cap to check the radiator was there any vacuum or pressure?

When you did the thermostat change did you completely bleed the coolant system of air? Also are you using just water or a coolant mixture?
