Need help with check engine code
So I've noticed that when the ignition is turned to the on position(just before the engine starts), both the P and D4 indicators are lighted.
This is for a 98 Accord EX 4cyl auto tranny.
Check engine light is not on and car seems to run as usual, no visible problems.
I think this D4 code has something to do with transmission. Has anyone experienced this before?
Thanks,
danz

Normal. D4 shuts off after about a sec along with the other lights, right?

No shifting problems. My light doesn't stay on. It turns on when the ignition is turned on, and shuts off after about a sec. I'm assuming it's part of a light self-test.
That's how it is until you start the engine.
Engine off but with the key in the "on" position, and the car in Park, the P and D will both be lit.

You mean the D4 light is supposed to stay on (not go out after two seconds or so) until you start the engine? I don't know about that one.

Thanks for all the comments.
THe D4 light does go off when I start the engine and the P stays lit until I shift. OR if I don't start the engine, it goes away after a few seconds.
It's just that I've never seen the D4 light and the P on at the same time so I was concerned. Kinda funny since I've had the car for about 2 yrs now and just noticed it in the last few months so I thought there was something wrong. I'll play it safe and swing by an autozone this week to see if there're any codes to pull.

The reason why it caught my attention is because I've never seen both lights illuminated in any car before. I've driven various makes and models and this is new to me.
I guess I'm still learning things about my accord. Since I bought the car used about 2 years ago, I've been trying to keep it in good running condition and usually try to pay attention to the little details and fix any problems before it gets worse.

If the light would stay on, people would freak out and be afraid to start the car. Thinking that the trans was stuck in Drive. There must be something wrong with your car. The light should go out, after a few seconds. Check for codes.

Another strange thing about Accords is some of them (maybe all) don't have a switch to turn off the glove box light. It is always on, as long as the running lights are on.
I thought there was a switch that turned it off when the glove compartment is shut. Doesn't make sense that it would be on all the time when main lights are on cause the bulb would burn out really fast. I have changed out the backlight for the clock and cruise button but not the glove box or the cabin interior lights.

I did that too. My green light that is on when cruise control is on burned out. Dealer wanted $12 for a little green bulb. I just replaced it with a blue LED. Looks a lot better and was cheaper.

The only time the glove box light is on, is when the running lights are turned on. So unless you spend a lot of time driving at night, it's not really on that much. I had my 92 Accord for 12 years and the glove box light never went out. It actually cuts down on some of the on-off , when you open the glove box during the day. Plus it's one less switch that can go out on you. Pretty smart, I think.

There are no codes, nor any noticable problems. The car has always been that way, and I had assumed it was normal. For the hell of it, since I already had some of the dash pieces out to change the cabin filter, I borrowed my buddy's extra, and known-good, ecu. Lo and behold, with this ecu the light turns out a couple seconds later. Plugged my ecu back in, light doesn't go turn off. So I switched ecu's with my buddy (since he doesn't use it anyway) and called it a day.

There are ways around that when you have both sets of keys. I've already had the keys reprogrammed anyway.
