Engine power dying....alternator?
I was driving a couple of days ago when my car started to die out. First the speedo dies and everything else slowly dims. I pulled over to turn off the engine and to start it up again, it doesn't. I was told it was my alternator, so I replaced it with one from the junk yard. Start the car, didn't work, so I was told to charge the battery, cause sometimes it does that when the alternator dies. Ok, that works, and I drive for about two days. Now my car starts to die again, when I jump my car it works for a little bit. What could it be now? the battery not charged up? Was it even my alternator in the first place and I just wasted a hundred bucks? someone help!

Generator? Just a wild guess. Also, an old battery will tend to loose its power fast, and will lose charge after a couple of days. Might want to try replacing it. I think you did waste $100. I am thinking its your battery that needs replacing.

Yeah, i was told by a "master mechanic" it was the alternator, but he didn't check it out so I can't blame him for it. I'm thinking it is the battery. I'm charging it over night and taking a trip to the nearest shop for a test. thanks for the input.

So will any other major parts outlet. I was having problems with my car...basically, I left my lights on, and then had it jumped, but didnt drive it long enough for the battery to recharge, so it wouldnt start again. Retard at Strauss tested it and said my alternator needed replacing and was quick to offer one from his store. All I had to do was drive it a little more. Those idiots know less about cars than me, and are real shady.

I had the same problem on my '01 Accord. We replaced the alternator and battery, but the car kept on dying. Then I had a pro look at my audio system, it was fine, the car kept on dying anyways... One day we found the problem, the wires inside the fuse box had been disconnected and they caused a short-circuit. Check out your fuse box and audio system (if you have one)

Re: Engine power dying....alternator? (benzcivic99)
Thanks for the tips guys. I went to get the batt/alter checked out, they said it seemed like the alternator was pushing hard for power. I did buy a used one, but I ran another ground from the alternator somewhere else and had the batter recharged, since it was a pretty old battery. The car has been fine for 2 days now, but i'm freaking paranoid to drive it around now. I just installed a new stereo, could that be a problem too? thanks
