Icon3 Check Engine Light

I own a manual 94 Honda Accord EX. I went for an oil change prolly around 4-5 months ago... my car was checked off as good (at canadian tire). I needed another oil change so I went back to the same canadian tire. The guy said my cv joint is broken, I got an oil leak, and my clutch is hard to release. My cluth is fine now, I have to fix the oil leak and my cv joint. But also for the past 5 months my check engine light will go on only after Ive been driving my car for a while. But not everytime I drive my car. If the light is on, I can turn my car off and the light will stay off.

This is my first car and Its in good condition for its age.... I dont want to get rid of it for a while so any help on the check engine light?

Short the two pin connector below the glovebox. Watch the CEL blinks when you turn the key to the ON position. Long blink equals ten, short blink equals one. Together they make a one or two didget code.

You have an intermittent issue with the engine management system. The ECM is reporting that some component is reporting a parameter that is out of range. The problem arises that the system is resetting itself whenever the condition isn't there and the light turns off.

If the lamp isn't on when you query the ECM, I doubt that you'll get a code. The ECM keeps an event history file in memory which can be accessed only with a professional grade scanner. In fact, the only way to purge that file is with the same mentioned scanner.

The quickest and least costly will be to find a shop with one of these scanners and have them look at the history file. More than likely it will be just one issue repeating itself. The info you glean will point you to the offending component.

Intermittent problem for sure. But you DONT need a scanner to read or clear codes on an OBD1 car. Just jump the 2-pin as mentioned by PHOOTBAG. To clear codes, either pull the backup fuse (7.5amp) or disconnect the battery for around 30 seconds.
