CEL code 8
Hey guys,
2000 Accord coupe ex
Got a cel code 8 yesterday.
Car is in limp mode, won't go past 3k rpm.
What I found is that it's the tdc/ckp code, and from looking around online, looks like it could be several things, so I wanted to come here and get your input. I saw that it could mean the distributor is going, could be a problem in the wiring, with the tdc sensor, etc. Just need a place to start.
A little back story, I've has a code 22 and 65 for a little while, I know the vtec solenoid has to be replaced and the wire end for the temp sensor also. Prior to it being in limp mode, it was cutting out at 4k rpm previously, which I attributed to the vtec solenoid. This car had some (hidden) issues when I bought it, so I'm not against fixing things, just need advice on where to start.
Thanks

Your ckp sensor is at the crank. It's possible the sensor and the timing pulley are just dirty. You will need to get in there and take a close look. It's possible the sensor is bad but normally it just gets caked up with crud.
Also, what would you suggest using to clean it? I would think anything like Brakleen or Carb Cleaner would be out of order. Engine degreaser?
I also put the compressed air straw in between the timing cover in the area of the TDC sensor, at least where it looked like the sensor was in relation to where the wiring went behind the cover and liberally sprayed compressed air in there.
Cleared the CEL.
voila
Car is back to running as it was. It still tops out at 4k, but at least it's not dangerous to pull out on a busy road only topping out at 3k. I have to get a new VTEC solenoid soon. Apparently the original one that was on the car was replaced with one that doesn't have the oil sensor on the housing. Just noticed the plug for the oil sensor laying there.
Thanks so much for your help, and I will indeed have to rip down the front of the motor one of these weekends and clean up that sensor just to be safe.
For the vtec code it could be a dented oil pan or even low oil causing that.
And it's not just the crank sensor, it reads off of the crank timing pulley so make sure that's clean too and the tdc is at the front balance shaft. Clean that up too.

I'll definitely have to take the whole timing cover setup apart and clean all the sensors in there. Thanks.
