Accord 97- engine won't crank up.
Hi guys,
First i would like to thank in advance for your time. My honda will not crank. It behaves as if the transmission was left in D drive. In fact when the key is rotated 1/3 in the ignition, the stick indicator in the dash is lighten for P park and D drive, then after a few second the D light turns off and correct light remains on according with the position of the stick. I tried to jump start with no luck. The car has good electric power , everyhing powers on just fine. Any suggestions will be welcome. thank you.

Re: Accord 97- engine won't crank up.
hey man i'd be willing to help out but you got to tell us more than that. Just sitting in the drivers seat and looking at the dash isn't giving us any idea of whats wrong with your car. first off have you checked to see if you got power to anything under the hood? get a volt meter and start checking stuff related to the starting system and charging system. how many volts is your battery? you got power going to the starter? have you tried to start the car in neutral?.... we can't help you with out knowing what works and what doesn't.

Brian thank you for the reply.... I am not at all good handling a voltometer. I wonder whats there under the stick shift that prevents the engine from starting when the car is left in D (drive) ? I think whatever mechanism prevents the engine from starting when left in Drive is stuck in the on position and the car does not start. Any imput would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well there is the an interlock switch-using my 95 as a reference-under there. However before just replacing I would suggest testing. With key on, press brake pedal, does it alow you to shift from park into the other gears...might also hear a slight click under there when you press the brake.
Sorry I'm more with "Brian", I'd really like to know what is going on at the starter and battery than that switch....

Is it the D4 light that is on? If it is then there is probably a code that is being stored on the ECU/TCU that will help you with your trouble shooting. Retrieve the codes from the ECU/TCU and go from there.
Listing the model and year of your car is a good idea when asking for help.

I would get some form of repair manual. they usually have troubleshooting guides. Very easy to find those manuals in cd forms on sale on ebay.
