Default 97 Accord Won't Shift INTO Park!?

Car is a 1997 Accord LX 4 door I4, automatic transmission. The car shifts perfectly fine in every gear and even shifts perfectly fine out of Park, but it will not let me shift into park.

I've searched many topics where the people say they cannot get their car out of park, but I am having the exact opposite problem. Everything is how it should be, except shifting from any gear into PARK. Does anybody know what could/is going on with my car?

Thanks for you help in advance.

If it shifts fine out of park, can you explain to us what you do finally do to get it into park for the night.

I press in the button like i normally would and I try to get it in, but it usually doesn't go in. I sometimes have to wiggle it side to side while pressing the button and push it with some force to get it to go into park.

I would disassemble the center console and see what is going on in there mechanically or remove some piece of hardened McD hamburger or dead rat. There has to be something blocking the linkage.

I don't see how this would help, it doesn't seem to be the shift ****. I mean, the button engages and disengages like it should when I shift down in the 1 and 2 gears of the gear selector, which you need to have the button pushed to select.

Oh, and a little off topic but this is directed towards Duane. What are you in Japan for? I will be there next January for a study abroad program at Temple University Japan, which is located in Tokyo. Are you located in Tokyo?

Common problem I find in auto integras is the shift **** doesn't disengage all the way (It's not something you can feel either). Another common problem I find is food stuck in the center console, but if it goes into park sometimes, it's probably not the food thing.

Alright, thanks for the advice, I will have to tear apart the center console and see whats up. It is probably food I suppose since it was working fine and than all of a sudden started having symptoms. (Damn late night Sonic run ) I have a spare shift **** too so I will into that as well. Thanks

I am in a suburb of Tokyo, its a very huge city, it will take about 2.5 hours to drive from end to end with low traffic late at night.

I retired from the USAF here some years ago and I have been doing cars since I first arrived here in 1995, the money is very good even though my clients are mostly limited to the military base, I only have a few competitors and none of them have any test equipment, I have my own 4 channel portable oscilloscope and I understand how to use it to its full potential, none of my competitors can touch me even though one of them has a 2 channel scope and a 5 gas analyser, they do not know how to use it. They also have a good scanner but they trust it too much and just change what ever part throws a code since they dont know how to prove out an improper code.

Where exactly is this school and what are you studying? My cell phone is 09073258584 when you get here.

It's Temple University Japan and my sheet says the address is "Tokyo, Japan 106." I have no idea if that is even an address or where it is. I'll be coming in around January 9th to complete a full semester there in Film and Media Arts.

P.S - I've got alot to learn about Japan. I know zero Japanese right now and not much about their culture or anything really. I just got accepted into the program so I'm gonna start doing some research.

You will get a lot of benifits as a student, they really do not mean much but something like medical insurance is a good one, check with our Embassy or your travel agent, get a public transportation pass, it will be good on the trains and busses, a major savings if you want to travel, and you will, with a newly found girlfriend, that will be easy too so be very picky and dont just grab the first thing that opens her legs unless you want to grab all of them, thats my recommendation, the second part that is. Although if you are smart you will grab a good one and let her take care of YOU, thats how it works her. She will hook you up with a nice cell phone and a car if you are lucky and if you are the man, a free place to stay with her too, good luck and bring the viagras. They like to grab an English speaking boyfriend so they can practice their language skills and they know that it will be a short time relationship like one year or less, no problem. Roppongi is the area where all the Embassies are here in Tokyo so that is where all the partying is, all nationalities, just go Japanese and get all you can out of it, dont be shy, thats just how it works.

Awesome paragraph Duane, I'll keep all that in mind Keep in touch

P.S - By the way, the problem was the shift ****. It wasn't pushing the mechanism down all the way allowing it to shift into park. Thanks for your help everyone.

Glad you got it fixed, just remember to take your shoes off practically everywhere you go private and some public places, just remember to look down at the floor when you go in anyplace, if there are lots of shoes or some slippers for you to change into then that one of these places, very important. They may put your shoes away for you.

You may want to check in advance about a drivers liscense, can you get one here as a student or do you need to get your international liscense from the US, I highly recommend you get an International in case you get to travel to another country, I really do not know how it works for students but I can ask an exstudent friend of mine tonight.

I was looking into getting an International Drivers License. I think that will be fine for the few months I am there, plus it does not seem to be too expensive. I'm looking into it a little more to find the gritty details

I talked to my friend today, you can drive on an International card as long as you are a student also. See what you need to do to get a multiple exit / re-entry stamp on your passport also, talk to the JP Embassy in the US for that also.

So you can exit the country and not have to get lots of extra stamps each time you come back into Japan, or be forced to kill time going to your local immigration office that handles the area where you live, if you dont do some serious traveling to China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, New Zealand and other places then you will have wasted you time here.

You can only go to climb Mount Fuji in July and August, thats it.
