97 Accord Timing Issue Need Help!
Hey guys, I have a 97 Honda Accord that I bought from someone for 250 dollars that ran but had a spun main bearing. I pulled the motor and rebuilt it. I have rebuilt many GM motors but never a Honda but found that it really was pretty straight forward and was very easy. We just put motor back in today and fired it up. It started up almost right away but would not stay running unless I keep giving it gas and will die if giving it a lot of gas. It will idle on its own but at like 400 -500 rpm's and rough. If you give it gas it will not do so easy as it sounds like it not getting enough gas, so you must feather the throttle to do so and when you get it to 2000 prm it does the popular surge up and down from 2000 to 1000 rpm? I cleaned out the IACV and it did not change? Cleaned the throttle body and no change? I have double checked my timing marks but after the 3rd time of trying to reset the timing belt It dawned on me to check where the rotor was pointing when at top dead center. I set TDC and removed the distributor cap and the rotor is NOT pointing at the number one cylinder but just passed it? If I then turn motor to where the rotor is, my camshaft timing marks are way off? The car ran fine just the ping sound of the spun bearing so to me my thought has been timing? We tried again to reset the marks (all where they are supposed to be) and restarted and it does let me go to just over 3500 rpm only was or twice and it does run smoother but then when giving it gas at 1000 to 2000 rpm it still surges and acts like it is not getting gas when throttling and will die the more you try? Sooooo I still think it is all timing and don't understand why the rotor does not line up?? I have included photos. Can someone please give me some input? Thanks!

Double check the main ground for the ECU - g101 - on the drivers end of the plenum. Be sure all of the wires are there and clean and tight.
For giggles, what are the colors of the three wires you currently have installed on the MAP sensor?

Ok, check ECU ground and yes wires all there and is tightened up good. Also the wire colors and the MAP are Yellow, green, and red. I took valve cover off and used a straight edge and yes I was one tooth off! I reset timing again and it runs a lot better! will idle at 700-800 rpm and can take it up over 3500 rpm BUT! it surges really bad!. Loosened the bleeder and put more water in it but no air in water? So I think my timing is good now just this stupid surging. It does still stall a little when giving it gas still!!
