so as most of you probably saw..my sister ran the purdue grand prix this past weekend. i will now give clifs of the past few months leading up to this including this weekend.
so a few months back she texts me and says "hey im going to drive for our team in the gp." my response is "awesome. have you ever karted before?" she says "yeah at rascals.." rascals is a family fun center where the karts go like ohhh zero mph. lol. i asked her what her perception of karting was. basically everything she said was completely wrong. lol. so i knew i had a task at hand but was excited for the challenge.
she came home from school one weekend so we went over ALOT of stuff. she is very smart so i knew she could put knowledge to action. i also knew i needed to do as much as i could to make sure she wouldnt get ran over. at the end of the day i felt like i had done as much as i could without getting "too far advanced". she left feeling like she got alot from it but i could tell she was a bit cocky about it..which could be bad or it could be good.
three weeks ago now she texts me on a tuesday which was their first day of practice. the text read "are you sure you cant come to any of the practices. that was alot more than i expected." lol. well that is the wake up call that she needed. we would go over stuff everyday before and after practice. i could tell she was improving time wise and confidence wise. the two days before quals she was 7th and 5th on the time sheets. that was awesome given that a few teams werent there but still to be in the top 10 without any previous seat time was amazing to me.
so we get to the day of quals..of course it is raining. they send 3 karts out to qualify at once for a given time. she is one of the first groups out and the track is still damp and cold. i think that played against her then one of the karts put it in the bails which causes a full yellow for 2 minutes. that also i think got in her mind which was not good given the circumstances. she ends up in p25 out of the 27 karts that made the field.
this past saturday was supposed to be race day but rain again. sunday it is..me brandy and bailynn go up and spend the night in lafayette to ease the long day. we get up and head out there. it is very overcast and very windy..awesome. bai just got over strep throat..come on sun come out for sunday. we get there in time to see the 3 sprint races which advance 2 of the 5 drivers to the 33 kart field. i didnt get to see her practice so i dont know what to expect from her.
she asked if i had any last minute advice. i said "you are starting way back so be defensive and try to stay clear in t1 one after the green." of course there is a big ol pile up and she gets swallowed by it. luckily she makes it out clean for the time being while a ton of other karts didnt. hard to know what position she was in but at lap 40 they do the top ten..she is p8. she stays around that position for the remainder of the race. the teams pit stop was super fast..almost as quick as the iupui team. with 15 to go they go down the order..she is p7..yes..oh crap the p8 kart is on her and fast. she gets passed..oh well still a top ten. lap 159 that kart is dead in the infield. nice back up to p7..headed to the pits. she is pumped "i got sixth." dang another kart must have fell out. even better.
the team had never finished the race before..in like 3 or 4 years so to finish was awesome. i told her id like to see a top 10 which i didnt fully believe would happen but it did. on the drive home she let me know that 2 karts didnt pass tech so she got 4th. sooo frickin awesome. she was the 5th girl to finish in the top 5 in like 54 years!!! so stoked...that got kind of long oh well..im excited. hope you enjoyed it.

yeah. she is better. woke up in the middle of the night last night so something might be up. i asked her if she like watching molly race. she said "race." i said "are you going to race." she replied "im race." in obvious one year old tone. lol.
