i'm trying to find a little light...

it's like an led with an elastic loop on the end.

you wrap it around one of your forks in front... it's really small...

can't seem to find it anywhere

crank length = preference imho. on a track bike with a tighter geometry most smaller riders use 165mm cranks because of overlap, but if you're a taller rider 170+ cranks will give you a mechanical advantage over smaller sized cranks.

cog size in conjunction with chainring = "speed"/ gear inches / gear ratio (there are plenty of calculators for this on google)

headset = whatever you decide to buy / go with. (BUT most likely if you buy a frame set, one will be attached.. )

i know my dad told me when riding my road bike that when you are riding the hood/top of the bars that your line of sight, looking down, shoudl see your bars in a direct line with your axle. if that makes sense....other wise..stem length is just preference on how "stretched" you wanna be

You might just want to get a complete bike first so you can really get a feel for what part is what, and learn more about what parts you'd really enjoy on a bike... not just what looks neat or what joe blow tells you is the shizzle. Poke around on sheldon brown's site, browse fgg everyday, check out the fg/ss forum on bikeforums, you know, stuff like that. It's like buying a civic and piecing it together before you know what the hell you're doing. You'd end up with a bunch of parts that may or may not even be any good.

when i built my bike, within 2 weeks i realized that i picked all the wrong parts.

my tastes changed really fast, so i agree with Skye that you should probably pick up a complete bike first..

the pista seems to the bike of choice for those starting out..

it's a decent base to build on as well. you could also check out the langster (i'm pretty sure they're around $500)

of you could browse ebay and find something used in that price range.

i spent too much on the frame.. stripping it, painting it... only to not like it after it was all said and done.

i want a different stem, i want better wheels, better seat... etc.

i just wish i knew more when i put it together. could have saved a lot of money getting what i WANT, rather than what i thought i needed...

i still like it... just wish i had done it different.

i agree with everyone as far as buying a complete bike to learn on and begin with.

i bought a complete 06 fuji track frame thinking i was going to be fine just how it was stock and the only thing left stock on it is the seat post now...which will probably be changed soon

now its just a matter of finding a decent 49cm NJS frame to swap all my components over.

you can look into bianchi pista or specialized langster
