Default Yet another oil return line Q

Ok, i was haveing this debate. I have read on here a million times to place return line weld as high as possable on the oil pan. What are the reasons? I have searched but came up with no reasons.

so the oil does not come into contact with the oil that's already in the pan, so it doesn't back up into the turbo. You want a completely free return system, so the higher on the pan, the less chance you have of this happening.

Exactly. Its not going to drain properly if u place it too low.

ok, humm. Well what about gravitational force? since the feed line is above the turbo and since the oil pick is sucking oil. Well im with you guys on this one. Any more info appriciated.

There is no sucking going on, although many wish there was.

It's all gravity. The pan fitting needs to be lower than the turbo fitting but higher than the level the oil will reach in the pan.

i would think that it wouldnt get proper lubrication, and the oil in the turbo would become stagnant.

doesn't the oil get forced out the turbo by the oil feed line? there's about 70psi going into the feed line.

if your return line is not install properly, does that mean the oil will be forced out the turbo oil seal. i have oil inside my compressor housing and it's only has 3k miles. i have the line tap in the highest place possible but the oil line loops down a little bit before going up to the turbo. it loops down about 1".

yea, i think the problem was the 1" sink in your return line. Anymore technical info welcome.

damn, i hope thats the problem. i didnt think that the oil seal went bad already after 3k miles. there is no end to end play on the shaft but a little play from side to side. i'll try to fix the oil line and see what happens

Mine only has a 1-2 inch drop, and that's the best I can do with the space I have. As long as it slants, you're fine. If you're using a -4 line for your feed, switch to a -3. That's what I had to do-too much oil going in, didn't matter what you did with the drain.

The oil is going to find it's own level in the drain line, the same height as the oil in the pan. So by having a oil return fitting in the pan below the level of the oil all you're doing is extending the capacity of the pan by however much oil return line is below the pan oil level. It just that now the oil pan fitting and part of the return line has become part of the oil reservoir, capiche?

so it's not bad to use -3 ans feed line because you are reducing oil flow to the turbo. what is the exact length of the oil feed line that comes with the kit. i'm going to try and get a -3 ans line tomorrow.
